BF question (esp if you've used a nipple shield!)

I've used this annoying contraption since day 1 because of flat/inverted nipples. FINALLY in the last few weeks, Max has been interested in the nakkid boob. You'd think I'd jump for joy because I've been trying to wean him off this thing forever, and it has been a challenge. One day he just stopped caring about it. BUT now I realized that my nipples get sore really easily and nursing feels so much better when I wear the shield. Is that normal? The left boob is usually less painful as a whole, and it doesn't hurt every time, but I would say 75% of the time. I thought it might be a bad latch but when I try to correct it and get his whole mouth around it and angle it right it still feels the same. Is extreme soreness normal? What am I doing wrong?

  • Do you think it is the same hurt, sore, cracked nipples newborns cause? For me, I never had that with the sheild, but when we weaned off it, I did have soreness for a little while my nips toughened up

    My thoughts exactly.

  • I'd have to agree with the PPs. I am sadly still using the shield after approx 1 zillion unsuccessful attempts to get her to latch without it. The only plus side to the shield is that I've never had sore nipples. Hope yours feel better soon!

  • the nipple shield protected that skin....So now it will take a little time to get used to it. I went thru the same thing when weaning from the shield. just put away so you aren't tempted to use it..it won't take long to get adjusted and I promise it's so so so much better without that darn thing!

This. I pumped one bottle a day so DH could feed her and give my nips a break when we were weaning off the shield. They'll be sore for a few days and then one feeding you'll look down and realize they don't hurt anymore. Hang in there mama!

  • I've been weening DD off the shield for the last month as well! (I have flat nipples) It was definitely not cold turkey but she is finally not needing one. I notice that the initial latch on is quite painful but after she sucks for a minute it seems to go away or get numb.

  • Same as PPs. I experience no initial discomfort when we used the shield. When we weaned from the shield, that's when I had pain and soreness. It goes away, though. Don't worry! We stopped using the shield around 2 months and I honestly can't remember the last time I BFed and it hurt. Give it some time. If it's not improving in a couple of weeks, I'd look more into latch issues.
