Natural Birth

Newly pregnant - how do I find a Dr. to support natural pregnancy?

Hello!

I just found out that I am pregnant.  Any suggestions for finding a doctor or hospital that supports my decision not to get vaccines while pregnant and to pursue a birth plan not involving drugs?

I have tried checking out a few OB/GYNs in the last year, and most of them have seriously guilted/scared me about the vaccine issue.  I know that there are good arguments for getting vaccines while I am pregnant, but I really want to have a doctor who listens to what I want to do and doesn't try to push any particular point of view.  It seems like all of my friends have gotten epidurals (and planned to), and their doctors seemed pretty traditional, so I don't have any good resources for referrals through word-of-mouth.

Thanks!

  • We ended up going with a midwife at a free-standing birthing center here in NM. She is wonderful and support us in not wanting to do any unnecessary testing or drugs during delivery. I know that a lot of midwives also work in hospitals if you are more comforable giving birth there. Just look for a CNM because they have degrees (and medical training). I'm sure that there are OB's out there who would support natural birth as well, it may just take more research. Also, if you end up going with an OB you could look into a Doula to help reinforce your wishes during the birth process. I hope this helps!

  • Like PP said, I am also using a midwife group at a free standing birth center. If you don't live near a birth center, maybe you can find a midwife practice that works out of a hospital near you. Midwives, in my experience, tend to let you be mostly in charge. They make suggestions, give me my options, and help me make a decision that works well for everyone. HTH!

  • Ask local childbirth educators or doulas in your area. They are likely have a good feel on which doctors are  supportive of natural birth.

There might be a Birth Network in your area:

     https://www.birthnetwork.org/

     They are a good resource.

Your local La Lache League might be able to help too.

All of this. Find a Midwife. Ask La Leche League who they recommend. You will find lots of like minded women there!

  • Which vaccines are you referring to? The only one recommended is the flu shot; all the others I can think of, like TDAP or rubella if you're not immune, are contraindicated in pregnancy and are given either before you conceive or after you deliver. Unless you're talking about Rhogam?

As for finding a natural birth friendly doctor or midwife, I agree with the PPs. Word of mouth is your best bet.

  • I think the vaccines recommended for me to get were tetnis, flu shot, and whooping cough.

  • google is your friend, start looking for midwives and free standing birth centers in your area. you can also look up a bradley method or birthworks child birth educator and ask them if they know of any home birth or birth center midwives in the area they most definetly will. if you want a natural birth stay as far away from a hospit and ob as you can. ob's are surgeons and not trained for natural birth.
