WDYT about my game plan?

I'm 39 weeks tomorrow. I have an appointment at 4 with my OB. The OB I'll be seeing is the one that flipped out at my bp being elevated at 36w and sent me to LD for tests which all came back normal. I have zero signs of pree besides high bp. My other OBs I've been seeing have been fine with where my bp has been staying [it is 120/90 today].

So of course tomorrow is the first day of school. I'm going only because my sub will be there and he fully knows he's teaching and I'm sitting there but I'm sure it will get my bp up a bit just from first day nerves. I'm terrified I'm going to go to the appt and he's going to want to induce then and there.

Would it be unsafe/unreasonable to ask them to do an NST, BPP, bloodwork and urine test and cervical check for bishop score and evaluate the need for induction from that? If we are both fine I haven't been spilling urine or anything, I just don't see how moderately high bp is a need to induce. I feel like this doctor will see I'm 39w and just pull the trigger.

Part of my family and friends tell me I'm being ridiculous and should just do what my doctor says so I don't have a stroke. The other part says it is my body and need to stand up for me and my LO. I want to avoid induction to be able to go into delivery naturally and deliver without any meds. Given the situation, what do you think about my game plan?

  • I don't think you are being ureasonable at all. If a slightly elevated BP is all you've got there is no need for induction. I'd ask for all of the tests possible before I let them induce. I hate the "Well the doctor said" line. You've done your research and know the risks and possibilities enough to think for yourself.

  • I would also show them your BP numbers from at home. Mine is always up at dr so I show them my home record so they can see it is not an all the time thing. Good luck.

  • My doc end up being ok with my top number being higher in the 140149 range but he said the second the bottom number gets 90 or above, he'll be looking to induce because although I'm spilling a bit of protein 151 which is partially caused by me being type 1 diabetic its not enough to warrant a pree diagnosis. I guess his philosophy is she's better out than in with a higher bottom number. GL! Hope he let's your LO stay in until your body is ready!

    1. Can you switch to a different OB for this appt? 2. I think your requests are reasonable. However. TAGS, if being out of you is safer for baby than being inside of you, you need [need!!] to find a way to come to terms with whatever the means to the end will be. For your own peace of mind, girl.

    Yes

Asking them do to things to verify that your baby is safe and doing well before induction seems really wise.  I would also consider trying to get a second opinion (maybe from a Dr in L&D if you get sent that way) if the first seems induction-happy.  If you start getting induction advice from several Drs, it would seem more serious (to me) and you might need to accept that it is the safest choice for you both.  GL.  Praying peaceful, calm and low BP readings for you tomorrow.

I am with Anita on this one Tags, you have been fighting the high bp for awhile now and you made it a lot farther then anyone thought. It comes down to what would be safer for you and baby Tags, none of us want to be induced but sometimes we have no choice. Good Luck I will be thinking of you keep us posted :)

  • If you feel uncomfortable with this specific OB and her decision, I don't think its out of line to ask for a second opinion or additional tests. Good luck and keep us posted!
  • Given how stressful the first day of school is, I think it is perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure that you need all of the other tests, but having them check more than one variable seems reasonable unless you are in imminent danger.

  • I don't think it's unreasonable to make sure they have valid reasons for calling for an induction. Get a second opinion if the first doctor seems trigger happy based on only your BP and being 39 weeks. Between you and two doctors, and with the results of other tests, I have faith you'll be able to come to a decision you can all agree is best for you and baby. Good luck, I'll be thinking of you!

  • I think your plan sounds perfectly reasonable, especially since you'll know there is a reason for a higher bp. I'd say explain that to your dr and that when you are able to rest more (like you will be doing after tomorrow), your bp stays lower.

  • Thanks, ladies! I appreciate it. I tried everything I could to see another doctor in the practice but because they are closed today, tomorrow's appointments are actually overbooked. If I can get a second opinion and those tests and they say induction, I will go into it whole heartedly. I just want to be 100 sure that the risks of induction don't outweigh the risks of keeping him in. But if everything checks out fine on the tests, I'm going to really want a second opinion and a clear explanation before I go ahead with it.

have you done a 24 hour urine collection lately? Unless your BP is insanely high, it seems weird to induce just on that. I was originally induced with only mildly high BP, but I also had a headache and protein in my 24 hour sample.

Maybe ask to do a urine sample? and just skip the NST for the BPP. I thought it was kind of a waste....

I've only done the pee tests at my doctor appts and the one at 36w at LD. No protein at any of those.

I agree. My bp at around 36 weeks was 126/190 and it wasn't considered high and I also didn't have an protein in my urine. Maybe it depends on OB's? Obviously in the end you need to do what's comfortable for you but if they are going to induce based soley on 120/90, it just seems odd to me.
