Team Pink mamas (S+TMs who have girls, too)

i was doing some "light reading" last night, and discovered that, apparently, baby girls can be born with breast tissue and even get their period...o.O

um? what?! really? this would have been nice to know ahead of time...i can't imagine how freaked out i would have been for this to happen without any warning!

did any of you STMs with girls have this happen? i'm curious how common this actually is...

While it's not technically their period (because you have to ovulate to have your menstrual period) yes, baby girls can have bloody discharge that looks like a period. My nieces both had this. It's relatively minor, just kind of gross if you don't expect it, and it goes away pretty quickly.

eta: my sister said that the pediatrician told them it is caused by the surge of hormones in both the mom and baby during the birthing process. No idea if that is the true reason/cause, but that it's not because something is "wrong".

that's what the article said, but it would have been really nice to know and to expect this...if i hadn't found that article by mistake, i never would have known it was coming!

  • Someone posted a PSA about it probably a month ago or so on this board.

One of my customer's grand daughter actually had to see an infant gyno because the bleeding did not stop.

I'm confused why you're saying it would have been nice to know ahead of time... you do know ahead of time.

It's been brought up on here a few times already too.  The nurses in the hospital also told me it could happen the first few days as well- but I don't remember seeing anything.

i guess i'm saying, if i hadn't found that article, i would have not known to expect it. it wasn't something that my doctor had mentioned, and nothing i've read in any of my books either. obviously, i know now, but it would have been nice to have been informed and not discovered this by chance.

    does that make more sense?

It wouldn't be your OB's "job" to tell you about it though - baby vaginas aren't really their specialty. However, I am sure any pediatrician worth their salt will tell you in the hospital before discharge or at your baby's first appointment.

No point in stressing now though - you know about it, plan for it, and honestly, it's not that bad. It's just red/pinkish discharge, if you were a fertility charter it's a cross between sticky and EWCM.

my OB is my pedi and my family doctor as well. :) and yes, now i know, and i can plan for it to occur, even if it doesn't.

i think it was just a moment of overwhelmed, yet another thing i don't know about having a baby...kinda hit me at a low point.

  • I can see how it could worry you/freak you out if you didn't know ahead of time, so I am glad you found the article!

I'm sure there will be many things that you experience with your nb, though, that no one warned you about! It's all part of the mommy initiation process, lol.

I already have a boy, but now that I am having a girl, I'm trying to prepare myself for a whole set of new experiences.

  • I was surprised when the post partum nurse told me about the bleeding.  There was no bleeding, but Grace had some breast tissue that did eventually completely go away when she was almost a year.

I was warned it could happen (same reason that Anita shared) but it never happened with my daughter.

This for me too.  The pedi on-call mentioned this while doing their baby check-up in the hospital.  Neither of my girls had any bloody discharge.

  • My discharge nurse told me this and that some baby girls produce breast milk.

  • Well, not a period, but yes, little girls can experience a brief bleed, and yes, they can be born with breasts. I've read that it's caused by all the hormones and that it goes away pretty quickly. Anyway, nope, didn't happen with DD.
