I love this name. My youngest sister's name is Meredith, and now she goes by Mere, which I actually think is cute. When she was born, my other sister couldn't say "Meredith" so she became "Meri-dee" and subsequently, "Dee" or "Dee Dee."
I don't think having a set NN is necessary. Sometimes they come organically and they're ones that you couldn't have planned. Also, you don't HAVE to have a NN. When my sister turned five she told us that she no longer wanted to be called "Dee" and that we were to only ever call her Meredith, and we did. None of her friends even shortened it. She chose to go by Mere as a teenager.

I have a bad association with the name, but even still I really like it. I think it would age well - sound good on a little girl as well as a grown up. NNs are hard though... I guess Mer or Merry.
I like Meredith. If you don't want her to be addressed as Mer then can make that known. However, when she gets older she may choose it herself. It's hard to tell with NN.
I love the name!! I had a Meredith in my class a couple of years ago, but she went by Merry and I actually couldn't imagine a more perfect name for her. She was an awesome girl!
I love the name and don't know anyone with this name irl. Classic and strong. But I have an aunt named Mary (Mare or Mare Mare) and I just couldn't shake the association. And I definitely don't want family to think I was honoring her in any way. (Not my favorite aunt to say the least.)
I will keep it on the short list anyway!

It's a bit of a stretch, but what about Myra or Mara as a NN? I have the same issue... love the name Meredith but really dislike Mere or Mary as NNs, and would want another option if we chose to shorten it.
I love the idea of Mara (Maybe Mera, so it's not confused with "Mars" sound) Thanks!

And THAT'S the exact reason WHY I like the name. lol My maternal grandmother was Mary and my mother was Marlene (named after her mom). They were the most important women in my life and both passed away 10 years ago.
I would really like to name a future daughter with a name starting with an M to carry on the tradition (I'm Michelle). I like that Meredith can be shorted to Meri (makes me think of my grandmother).

My name is Meridith! I love it and I am always getting compliments on my name. growing up I never allowed anyone to call me Mary/mery/Meri. I did not like that nickname. And it pretty much worked, to this day no one uses that nickname for me. My middle name is Jay, so I do get a lot of MJ and Jay from old close friends and family, lots of Mer (pronounced Mere) and I don't mind at all. but lots of people call me Meridith. My biggest issue is that my name is spelled with an I where most put an E. always corrected people on the spelling growing up, but it never bothered me, I liked it actually.

that's awesome that you have good associations with Mary! I wish I didn't have bad association with my crazy aunt Mary! I love having warm connotations with names like that

My name is Meredith, and my family and closest friends call me Mere (pronounced Mare). I always preferred that nickname to Merry/Merri. Teachers and co-workers call me by my full name.
But, like PPs have said, you don't HAVE to have a nickname.
My name is Meredith and my twin brother couldn't pronounce it when we were little, he said, "Mere-biff". So, to help him out, my mom gave me "Mere" as a nickname when we were learning to talk (pronounced Mary). Through school people mainly called me Mere but now it is about 50/50. At 34, I have NEVER minded if people call me Mer or Mere. I call my friend Erin, Er or Melanie, Mel so I don't see why it would be different. People that you know and love are going to shorten your name and give you nicknames...that will always happen.
Side note, I have met people that have said, "Oh, I ONLY go by Jennifer or Elizabeth" (full names, no nicknames) and I think that is fine, too...I just figure that there are more important things to worry about in life than how someone might shorten my name ;-) Just my 2 cents!
Re: Meredith
Ick. That's my worry... I have bad name association with Mer/Mare
Fact.
I love the name Meredith, but besides "Mer/Mare" or "Meri," there really aren't any nicknames you can redirect people with.
If you hate Mer, you probably just shouldn't use the name...or be prepared to correct people.
I like it's a lovely name, however Grey's Anatomy comes to mind immediately with this name, so it's out for us. I can't stand that show.
I do believe the only natural NN is Mer.
