fet with single embryo?

We discussed the situation with the RE at our WTF appt on Tuesday.  He is going to allow us to do a few unmonitored cycles of clomid (monitoring with just lh kits and progesterone tests).  He said the FET went as smooth as could be and that our blasts looked great...he couldn't see any reason for the "implantation failure"

He did mention the possibility of testing for some immune issue (can't remember name of it) due to this failure, my previous chemical pregnancy, and my miscarriage at 9 weeks.

I'm contemplating transferring my 1 remaining frozen embie.  I'll be sick if it doesn't work but then again we are paying the storage costs ....and if we do it within this next year we wont have to redo the blood tests and the sonohystegram (so my transfer total will be closer to only about 1500 bucks).   I know its still pricy but is a drop in the hat compared to a fresh cycle.

Would you transfer 1 embie?

1 chemical and 1 loss at 9 weeks prior to DS
IVF #1 1/10-transfered 2 blasts- DS born 10/2010

Trying for # 2 since 2012.  2 failed FETS 1 failed IUI.
IUI#2 4/14/14-- BFP !!!!! Beta #1 14dpiui= 45 Beta #2 16dpiui= 80  Beta #3 18dpiui= 88 (chemical pregnancy)
March 2015- Chemical pg

1/25/16- BFP  Beta1 12dpo = 17, Beta 2 14 dpo = 28.. resulted in one beautiful boy born 9/21/16 :)

Re: fet with single embryo?

  • I transferred my lone frozen embie and its this pregnancy. My thoughts are; if it's a decent embie, it has a good shot. 2 decent embies gives u a shot a twins. If ur dealing w a good embie, it does not increase ur odds a lot by transferring two. It does increase ur odds of multiples. I would def do it again. GL.

  • I also just transferred our last remaining snow baby.  I agree with Vanessa, if it's a good embie you have a good chance.

I may be the wrong person to take advice from since I have never had a frostie. But, with IVF#1 I only had two embryo's, with IVF 2  and 3 I only had one each.  I ended up doing sET  with 2 and 3 since I had no choice.  If it's a blast of good quality I would do it In.One.Second!  Most of the ladies posting here were a single embryo at one time, who stuck.

    GL and lots of PPV's!!!

  • I'm truly not trying to be a jerk and I know everyone approaches this entire process differently, but why wouldn't you transfer it? Is it because you're curious if the tests would show anything different?

We did an FET that didn't work for us, but I can't imagine going to all those lengths and celebrating having anything frozen only to not use it.

    Good luck!

. Just to give u the flip side...I did another fresh cycle after getting my 1 frostie. I had wanted to save it, bc I'm 36. I was hoping it could be a sibling, when I was 38 ish.

In the end, I changed my mind...bc at least I knew it was a good blast, and what if I never got another? I also could not handle doing a 4th fresh in a yr. I was starting to loose it.

I did use mine, but wanted to share the reason I waited.

  • I can weigh in on both sides of the argument -

I only had 1 frozen embryo left from IVF#1, but elected to do an OOP fresh instead of using that embryo.  For us, we didn't have much faith in the quality of the embryo, and we also had the same desires as V to use this for a sibling.

Now that we have DS, we are only going to be doing sETs going forward.  Based on my previous PG, I'm concerned about my ability to carry multiples to term and don't want to take the chance.

TTC since April 2009 dx = PCOS; TTC History for DS - A FET miracle after 7 IUIs; 2 fresh transfers, and 1 other FET resulted in BFNs. Hoping and Praying for baby #2: Cycle 1 - FET; November 2012 BFN Next Steps - who knows? Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • I would.  If you decide to do another fresh cycle if this doesn't work, all you've lost is the $1500, but if it does work that saves you from doing another fresh cycle.

  • ** Lurker ** Ticker Warning **

I would definitely test for auto immune and blood clotting issues before proceeding. Especially because your RE mentioned it and with your history.

A single embryo transfer is fine, but I would make sure that your body is not "fighting off" the pregnancy first.  You don't want to waste your Single Embryo if your body doesn't want to be pg and will reject the embryo.

A simple, very high level, RPL (recurrent pregnancy loss panel) can be done by any doctor.  Quick simple blood test.

There are more intense and involved auto immune / clotting testing that can be done also if you are intetested.  Some by a regular RE who is open to this kind of testing or by a sub-specialist called a Reproductive Immunologist (RI). There are only a handful of RI in the US, though, so that can be harder to coordinate (but do-able).

  •  I guess I was concerned that if my transfer with 2 perfect frozen blasts didn't work then my chances of it working with just one would be pretty slim.....  my other concern my dr actually brought up the fact that with only one embie we run the risk of doing all of the prep and then not having it thaw well and have nothing to transfer.

as far as the bloodwork i need to look through my records....i have the records from when my dr was at his old practice, i hadn't got them to him yet so he didn't have everything...but i swear i already had this bloodwork done but will send to him

  • *** Lurker ** Ticker Warning ***

If you had the RPL tests before you had your son, you will want to retest.

There is a theory (no proof) that sometimes after having a boy, that certain types of auto-immune issues can occur that were not present before.

Again, doesn't hurt to check before cycling again in my opinion.

    Good luck to you!

  • I did a sFET and it didn't work but I would have one it again but our last two were frozen together.

I agree about the testing.  It can change after being pregnant too. I have autoimmune issues this time that I didn't have last time.
