Aside from the fact that we're having another LO soon...
We've kept both the gate at the top of the stairs and the gate across DS's room up, even though he is 3.5 and can open the gates on his own! Primarily, I like that the sound of him opening the gates alerts me to the fact that he's awake or leaving his room or whatever. I don't like when he wanders the house without my knowing. Secondly, the gates are great for keeping the dog out of certain areas. And I'm sure they'll also soon prove useful for keeping Little Sister out of DS's room. Finally, our playroom is upstairs, and we often have friends over who have younger kids.
Though the gates stay open 80 of the time, I don't see us getting rid of them anytime soon, not even once both kids are old enough to open them!
