Babies change

After all the posts about "the four month wakefulls" and all the other changes that have little labels I I just think its funny that people feel the need to label everything our children go though as the grow. Babies change and grow all the time, their sleep patterns will change 100 times during childhood it is all normal. Our children will grow and change so much this first year at an amazing rate, but even after that toddlers grow and change and then children all the time. The best advice anyone has ever given me in patenting is as soon as you get used to and think you understand your child they will change! My eight year old is still this way and I don't see it ever ending. Just my way of thinking none of you have to agree.

    I agree.

There is no 4 month "wakeful" in all my child development books so I kind of smile a little every time I see it here.

I agree. I've never heard of 4 month wakeful period anywhere else, but on The Bump it's talked about like it's a scientifically proven fact.

I still feel like my daughter is a new baby every few weeks. Every time I get some kind of routine with her schedule or comforting her, it will suddenly go completely out the window and I have to figure her out all over again :)

  • I agree!  I never heard of the four month wakeful until The Bump.  I just assume babies go through fussy periods.  They are unpredictable.  I think it's easier for 2nd time moms to accept this though because they have been through it all before.

I also agree with you about older children constantly changing as well.  I swear it's something new with my 5 year old every week!

  • I don't know if I really buy into the 4 month wakeful thing, but I do think it has to be more than coincidence that so many of us are reporting a sleep regression in our babies around the same time.

I think it's just a different way of looking at things. Some people are more inclined to read and research everything ahead of time, and others prefer to just go with the flow and see what happens. I feel they're both fine, but I'm definitely a researcher! I love reading about the developmental leaps that babies make; the change in sleeping pattern around 4 months is just a sign of all the amazing growth that babies go through around that age. And yes, babies change and grow all the time, but there are still big trends that babies tend to go through at certain times, and there is one around four months. I guess I don't get why it matters that some people choose to document these things.

Wow, I DEFINITELY didn't learn about that period on The Bump.

I think The first place I saw it mentioned was on kellymom, and then I read about it in several, several other places. You might want to do a search if you think it's a Bump thing...

  • I do agree to some extent. I had never heard of these things with my 2 older children. It makes sense and things do seem to happen according to these "labels" that have been made from them. I am sure my other 2 kids went through it, I guess I just didn't call it anything but being a baby and growing.
