I am wondering if anyone has taken their lo on a cruise? My parents want to go on a family cruise as our Christmas present. We have cruised before but are just curious about taking the kids. Ds will be 5(and I'm sure he will love it) and dd will be 14 months. Any advice? It will be a 5day cruise on a carnival ship. I'm already thinking of all the packing and what toys to take.. oh and they will both need passports(right?) Did you use the stroller or carrier on ship... any advice?

Re: 14 mo on a cruise... advice???
It was totally fine with DD and she had a great time. Yes, we brought our stroller and it was absolutely needed. We have the City Mini and it reclines almost flat so DD napped in it quite a bit. She hates carriers, so it was also important for touring the island; we went on a five nighter to Bermuda.
Yes, you will need a passport for the kids. Carnival may not require it, but you need it for emergencies to get home. If you have an emergency on some random island, you can't fly home without a passport.
Tips: Don't worry too much about toys. We were hardly in the room. Bring your own sheets for the PnP. Bring your 14m old in the pools...lots of people say babies in diapers aren't allowed in the ship's pools, but we called ahead and asked Royal Caribbean and they had "no information" about diapers in pools, so we brought her in all of them with no issues. Also, book an early dinner time. And relax! Not everything will go perfectly and that's okay, it's vacation. GL.
My DH and I went on a short Disney cruise without DS in Feb. There were lots of LOs on that cruise and they were in strollers. I think you would sorely miss the stroller if you left it at home. The cruise line may rent strollers, if you're worried about space. However, it's probably similar to flying with the stroller. When we flew w DS, we rolled the stroller all the way up to security and then took him out to walk through the metal detector. Then put him right back into stroller. No big deal. Then you'll just roll it to your ship cabin.
I can't wait to cruise again but I'm not sure when we'll want to take the kids. I don't think they can do the carnival kiddie camp before 3 though. I believe you can get an in room sitter for DD though. I would highly recommend bringing the stroller. I've seen people using them all over the ships before. It seemed convenient. Passports are probably also the way to go in case of emergency like PP said.

We took DS on a Disney cruise at 10.5 months old and are doing another one with DH's family in December. We had a blast.
I would definitely bring a stroller, preferably one with a recline. DS took his two daily naps there and it worked very well for us as we weren't stuck in our room.
A 14 mo. old on a cruise sounds like a bit of crazy-pants to me. I think step one is to call the cruise line and see what sort of child care they offer. My mother just went on an Alaskan cruise, and the ship offered child care only for older children. I don't know what the age range was, but she said my DD wouldn't have qualified (she's 21 mos). I'd go insane on a cruise with a 14 mo. old without some short breaks so that I could get off the boat at some of the ports and participate in activities.
