Anyone going to a BFing support group?

There's a couple different ones I'm thinking about going to, b/c if nothing else it will get me out of the house and help me meet other moms in my area. One is held in the back of a kids/maternity store and one is at a hospital. Both have LCs and seem to offer good resources and info. Just wondering if anyone has attended a group and was it helpful?

Re: Anyone going to a BFing support group?

  • Yes, our hospital offered a free one 1x/week run by a LC.  I started it at 6 weeks with DD and we could go for their first year.  I'm still really good friend with a lot of the moms/kids, and we even started our own walking group and playgroup out of it.

Maybe try them both out and see which one you like better.

  • I'm going to try to go to the one my midwives have at their clinic Thursday mornings.

  • I don't plan on it unless I have trouble and need support.  A coworker is REALLY pushing me to go to a local group.  It just stresses me out more and if I end up getting the hang of it on my own, then I don't see the point.

This. I want to try it on my own before I look into a support group. Although I do have to say that La Leche League scares the poo out of me so if I need a group I'll look into the hospital ones first.

  • A friend of mine went to a La Leche group meeting once.  She left when they started pulling boobs out and nursing.......some with 3 year olds!  However, having access to a LC would definitely be a good thing.  Good luck.

  • As long as I have someone to watch DD, yes! I don't want to have to keep chasing after her so she doesn't stomp on everyone else's newborns.

I was a part of mine until DD got too hard to contain, and it was great. I made some great friends one of whom babysat DD last night, got help, and had a good time.

  • I'll probably go if I need support...or if I want to get out of the house and be with grown ups. :

  • I'm a FTM and none of my friends are "in the family way" so I'm mostly worried about feeling isolated and discouraged as a new mom. Our friends haven't been as supportive or understanding as I would have hoped during my pregnancy, so I feel like I need to start meeting some new people who have a similar lifestyle. I figured a BFing group would be a good starting point, even if I'm not having serious issues I can still get some guidance.

  • How did you find out about the group? I would be interested in finding one of these.
