Adoption

Foster parents, where were you...

....when you got your first placement call and any after that? I'm just curious now that I'm in the waiting stage. My FYS and the agency director came to meet me yesterday. They said to be ready especially since it's a holiday weekend! I'm nervous!

Re: Foster parents, where were you...

  • All of my calls came in the afternoon during the week so I was at work.  Best wishes to you and the child/ren that will soon be needing your home!

  • 5 days from the day we were approved. Then the next day got a call we turned down. Way out of our age preference. See my next post. We just got a call for a tiny one. We have been licensed a total of 9 days.

  • it was within the first 3 weeks. I was at home, sitting in a chair on a break from work. I could barely finish the conversation and fell to my knees crying and thanking the Lord for answering our prayers as soon as we hung up the phone. 7 months later and he is still in our home and the love of our lives. We are currently fighting out some legal issues with our foster care agency, but the case plan goal has officially been changed to adoption, which we are so happy about!

Good luck with your journey! You will never forget where you were when you got the call!

  • I waited for 4 yrs, little different situation though, single woman, going thru foster system for adoption.  I don't remember where I was when I got my first possible call, but I do remember where I was when I got the call that I was chosen as the placement.  I was in the middle of the grocery store.  I had a cart half full of stuff when I got the call that I was gonna be a mommy.  I started to cry and ended up leaving my cart in the middle of the store.
  • I was driving with a coworker on our way to lunch.  It was crazy!  So much excitement, but then you are trying to remember all of the questions you are supposed to ask.
  • Usually at work!  Once we were literally getting in the car to go on an out-of-state vacation.  We got our first call within a few weeks of licensing, but didn't take the first couple we were asked about.  Our agency kept pushing because they wanted to get us going, which was hard for us since we were adoption motivated and wanted to be careful about the situation we dove into!  The first one we did take, I received a call at 3pm asking us if we were interested, then at 4:30pm we were told we were selected and CPS would be arriving at our home at 6pm with the child!  Before I knew it, I was in the baby section at Walmart panicking about what supplies I needed to have that night!!!

Look before you leap - but leap.
