Just Millie?

I have always wanted to name a little girl Millie, after my great-grandma Mildred, who only went by Millie.

Camille, NN Millie, has been on our short list for a long time now, but I just had a friend elude on Facebook that she will be using it. WDYT of just Millie for a little girl? Does it age well/ sound okay with my DD Emma?

Not crazy about it by itself, but I adore it as a nn. Do you like Amelia? Millie works as a nn for that name as well.

Yes this. I don't think Millie can stand alone. It is adorable as a nn though.

  • We can't use Amelia, and she's a really good friend, who lives near us. Our children would play together and be in school together.
  • What about just using Mildred, and truly honoring your grandmother?

That said, I don't usually mind nicknames as full names. I think it's cute. I still like Camille nn Millie better than Millie as a full name, though. Maybe she won't use it, you never know.

If you decide to go with just Millie, I love the name Millie Kate. Just a thought :)

  • Emma and Millie are darling together, and I support using Millie as a name on its own. There's nothing "unprofessional" or "childish" about it by itself. It's just a short name.

That said, I also really like it as a nickname for Millicent. I don't know if you've considered that option.

  • I said it's just ok.  DH's pseudo grandmother is Millicent and only goes by Millie.  I love Millie but always picture the evil Disney witch Malefocent with Millicent, though it's growing on me.  But we feel like Millie doesn't grow very well and have been thinking Amelia/Emilia instead.  Camille is nice and who cares if your FB friend might use it.  I think in some scenarios, even cousins can have the same name so I wouldn't cross it of just because of FB friend.

ETA:  just saw that your kids will play together and go to school together.  While Camille isn't a name you expect to run into often take it from everyone who does have a common name that it will be ok to have more than one in your circle.  If she feels like you're "stealing" it you can always point to Grandma Mildred.  Do you know if friend even intends on calling her Millie?  Also, I like the pp idea of just choosing Mildred and calling her Millie exclusively, plenty of people do that with most names.  DS is only Theodore if he's in deep trouble.

  • I'm in the minority with this name because I LOVE the name Millicent, and everyone who I talk about it with, likes it only because the nickname is Millie...and I really don't like Millie for some reason.

Millie to me, sounds immature and there's something about it that sounds super trendy. I think it's the similarity to Maddie.

I'd definitely only use it as a nickname.

  • My cousin's name is Millie. She's in her mid-twenties. She was named after our grandma Mildred who passed away before we were all born. However, my aunt and uncle did not want to "bless" an 80s child with the name Mildred, so they did Millie instead. I think it's cute.

My other grandma's name is Camille and I am probably using that as a middle name. I think Camille, while still "old-fashioned" is a pretty name that isn't too old sounding for a little girl. That's a shame that your friend is using Camille!!

  • What is wrong with using Amelia? I get that you have a friend with that name, but you will be calling her Millie. And by the time your DD decides she wants to use her formal name, it won't matter.

I never understand the argument of "I have a friend with xyz name so it's off limits". My DD is Katherine. I have literally over a dozen friends named Katherine most go by Katie and I never once thought anything of it. None of them assumed my Kate was named after them. Some were happy I chose it because they love their own name but that is the extent of it.

  • I think Millie is great as a stand-alone name.

I also think Mildred nn Mille is a nice way to honor your grandmother.

Another option is Matilda, which usually gets the nn Tillie, but I think Millie would work, too!

  • I do like Millie as a nn, but I'm definitely not a fan of names like Mildred or Millicent. I'd need some sort of more formal name, as I can't imagine a grown adult wanting to be called Millie all her life.
