My MIL has a toddler bed handmedown that works good for my LO. It stays in the guestroom for nap, but if she's staying overnight it gets moved into the LR next to their bedroom.
At my parents, she either sleeps with us (which never works) or I put her in the other guest bed with some pillows on the floor. Works fine too.
DD spends an average of 1 night per week with my parents (usually when I am out of town for work). They have a crib in the corner of their room and that has worked well for the last 18 months. We are starting to think about what we will do after the crib (their beds are very high so putting her in their beds is not an option).
If she stays with my MIL or travels with us she sleeps in the pack n play, but that is getting harder since she's so tall.
I think we are going to start looking at toddler travel beds for the future.
We have a peapod tent that we've used with both girls. We have had some trouble with the mattresses (they replaced it once for free - even though it was over a year old, the new one sprung a leak but the circumstances are such that its really our fault). However we often put it on top of foam or an air mattress or even a quilt). Both girls have traveled pretty well with it (and it folds up so small for travel!)

You could always get a cheaper crib for grandparents house...$139 at walmart
My LO doesn't sleep well at all in pack in plays. When we go on vacation I go to the extent of renting a crib just so she gets a good night sleep.
