When to TTC again?

Just curious as to what you were told by your OB.  My OB said to have 2 years between births (VBAC or C/S) so to TTC when DS is 15 months.  Seems like forever.  I'm pretty sure i'll have a RCS and everyone else I know who had a C/S were told 18 months between RCS.  How long were you told to wait after your c/s to start TTC again?

Re: When to TTC again?

  • I got the all clear at 6 months PP to TTC if we wanted. We didn't for over 2 years, but that was our choice. They did say that If I wanted to try for a VBAC they would like me to wait at least 12 months before TTC.

  • I asked at my 6 week checkup whenever I felt ready. My OB said while there were some risks of closely spaced pregnancies the overall risk of complications was low especially for someone like me (young and healthy).

  • I was told I am not a candidate for VBAC there was no need to delay TTCing. The standard for VBAC is 2 years though.

  • I got the all clear at my 6 week PP visit with my first and 2nd. When I had my 3rd, my OB did tell me to wait 1 year before TTC but that was because I had JUST had 3 c-sections in 3 years and she thought my body needed a rest.

  • I was told 2-3 years from my first c-section.  I plan on 2 years that way I can convenience DH about #2.  :)

  • I was told whenever we wanted to try at my 6 weeks pp.  We have 2 - 14 1/2 months apart and both were c/s.  We conceived about when DD was 7 months old.  I actually had a preemie with DD and DS was actually "full" term so I had no problems with having 2 C/S in that amount of time.  And C/S #2 recovery was so much easier than the 1st one!

  • I was told that we could try after 2 years as well. They didn't really give me much reasoning behind it...

  • My Dr said we were fine to try whenever, but if I wanted to try for a VBAC I had to wait 18 months. ( wasn't clear though if that was 18 months before trying again or 18 months between deliveries) I didn't  bother asking since I knew we wouldn't be trying until DS was at least 18 months anyways.
  • I asked this at my 6 week check up. My doctor said if I wanted to try for a VBAC I would have to wait a full 12 months. Otherwise if I was okay with a RCS I was cleared to start trying again at the 6 week check up.

If you're good with a RCS do what you feel is best. If they can't give you good solid reason for YOU to wait then go ahead. Some offices have standard guidelines they tell everyone. In the end though if you become pregnant before it's probably nothing they don't always deal with.

I think about the same way with the # of c/s question. DH and I always wanted 4 kids. When I had to have a c/s with #1 I asked my doctor how many I could have. She said "We don't recommend more than 3 c/s........but---we see way more than that all the time." She went on to tell me that one of her patients just had c/s #8.

I think I've come to terms with a RCS. We started TTC #2 when DS was 6 months old. If I get pregnant before December a RCS it will be. If not maybe I'll shoot for a VBAC. :)

  • i didnt think to even ask my OB, i'm glad i saw this post. we talked about TTC for the second one here in a few years but we were debating the time frame because Im 26 and i dont want to be over 30 and having babies (personal choice, not trying to be offensive to anyone). i know personally i want to get my body back first, i gained 73 lbs and its almost off, but all my awesome muscles are gone : ( is it a bad idea or a good idea to get back in shape first or should i wait til im done having babies? I was totally healed at my 6 week checkup and had been for a while, so i wonder if im ok to TTC in about 2 years? i will definitely have to call my OB when he gets back from vacation.
