Aaaand I have a tummy sleeper! A few questions

Okay so we were still swaddling but working on the transition with one arm out most nights well last night at one point she had both arms in, I heard her cry and she was belly against the side of the crib, in my half asleep state I didn't realize she was trying to turn over. The next feeding she was one arm out, put her down and a little while later I check on her and she is on her belly with one arm swaddled so I unswaddle her, feed her and put her down. Just now I hear a cry, check on her and she's on her belly but she is completely asleep so I guess she is trying to be a belly sleeper! Now of course I can't go back to sleep (it's not even 6am yet, on a Saturday!!!) because I feel like I have to keep checking on her! I guess this is a good weekend to transition out of sw addle and to belly since it's a long weekend. We JUST made the crib transition too!

Okay that got long- now a question! She can't roll belly to back yet (well actually she has done it twice but I think it was a fluke) so is she just going to sleep on her belly all night now and just cry if she wants to roll over?

Also, I've heard that some babies become better sleepers once they are tummy sleepers- has anyone experienced this?

And lastly- how do I not keep checking on her?? I know people say you get used to it and stop worrying but how long did that take for you?

  • We have a belly sleeper too. For the first 2-3 days I tried to constantly flip him back over and he would go right back to his belly.  I knew we just had to give in as he was ready.  He is sleeping so much better now, never wakes in the middle of the night, sleeps from 7:15pm until about 5:30-6am and eats.  I just check on him a few times at night and make sure his face is not down, but to the side.  I have only seen him roll back to belly. It only took me a few days to get use to the idea and now we are good to go with it.  It is funny now that when I am lowering him into the crib, he already begins flipping over, ha!!!

    Good luck, it's awesome!!

  • DD naps on her belly a lot, but doesn't put herself that way at night. It is possible she may wake herself up wanting to roll over, but I think she'll be fine. I have no idea how not to check on her. I suppose it just becomes more comfortable, like how we all used to check on them on their backs when they were little.

  • Ari sleeps fine at night but is the world's worst napper. I recently started putting him down on his belly for naps and I have seen a HUGE improvement.

He isn't rolling belly to back yet either so I put him there. I mess up the transition a lot though so I think it's something I need to learn. We have an angelcare and a video monitor which totally helps on the whole checking thing.

Right now I am staring at his back, watching it go up and down. I would never put him down on his belly unless I knew he was breathing. But I am neurotic so...

  • Tummy sleeping hasn't helped DS sleep any longer. He's still up every 3 hours, though I'm not positive if that's because he's mad he can't flip back over yet or because he's hungry but we're pretty sure it's hunger. It took a few nights before I stopped worrying so much about the tummy sleeping, I just kept reminding myself he wouldn't do it if he wasn't ready. I still check on him but probably no more than I did when he was back sleeping. My worries now are because we are transitioning to his own room :-( I agree, this long weekend is good timing for sleep transitions! GL!

  • Ds sleeps worse now that he sleeps on his belly. You get better, I first used to check on him non stop. Now after 2 months or so of this I just check on him before I go to bed.

DD can't roll belly to back yet, either. At first, she would cry if she wanted to go to her back, but now she has decided that she likes sleeping on her tummy and only cries if hungry or ready to get up.

I can't help you here. DD is sleeping about the same, but she was a good sleeper before. (My 3 yo DS is the poor sleeper.)

It's probably easier for me because DD is my second child. I checked on DS a lot when he was little, and he wasn't even a tummy sleeper. I check on DD (& DS) before I go to bed and then leave them alone unless they are crying. DD tends to be a noisy sleeper, so I can usually hear random noises on the monitor that let me know she is okay.
