Tricare standard and surgery?

Hubby was in the ER with Galstones, they told us to see a general surgeon to have them removed Monday.

My question is, do we need a referral from a PCM? Hubby only sees someone at the VA for his once a year check up. I cannot get the handbook to open up on their site. So I am a little peeved

    Well, the surgery should/needs to be preapproved by Tricare. As precaution I would call my PCM and ask for a referral to a general surgeon.

    I've never gotten an authorization for anything and haven't had a problem having medically necessary procedures covered under Standard.
