Pregnant after a Loss

Tell me your experiences with Zofran...

I just took my first pill about an hour ago and it has taken the edge off, although it's hard to say. The PgAL part of my brain is freaking out a little because I just introduced another new medicine into my body. But it was my OB after all who called it in, so I just have to trust her.

In an odd way I feel a little guilty doing this. I absolutely LOVE that this LO is giving me such strong symptoms, which reassures me that s/he is still there. But, I also know that this much nausea can cause me to become dehydrated, which isn't good for either of us.

How many of you are on Zofran? How long does the relief last for you? Any side effects? TIA. My nausea is now out of control, so I had to do something. I've been given strick orders that if I vomit more than three times back to back, I need to go to the hospital for IV fluids. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Re: Tell me your experiences with Zofran...

  • Zofran helped a tiny bit early in my pregnancy, but shortly after I barely noticed any difference when I took it.  The main side effect it gave me was really bad constipation.

The only thing that ended up working was Unisom.  I still take one every single night otherwise I am sick the following day.

Interesting. Was your sickness mainly in the morning, or was it all day long?

  • I've had all-day sickness (worse in the evenings), and it's helped me a lot. I started taking 1 a day but now I take half of one a day. It definitely causes major constipation though.

  • Zofran is seriously the only thing that got me through the first tri. It was soooo worth it. How many I took in a day depended on how bad the symptoms were but the pills would only work for the 8 hours then I'd have to take a new one if it was bad enough. I didn't even need to look at a clock. I could feel it wearing off at hour 8. They do cause awful constipation though. I ended up taking a stool softener with every pill.

  • Thanks ladies. Yay, another thing that causes constipation! Lol. I've been hitting the Colace, Metamucil, and dried prunes here and there when I need it. Maybe now they need to become a daily ritual as well. Surprise

All.day.long.every.damn.day.  In case you can't tell, it suckeddddd (I didn't vent in the FB group because I knew none of you wanted to hear it and I really was grateful for every single symptom).  Lately I have been feeling so much better so I have tried on 2 separate occasions to give up Unisom but I got sick the next day both times.

  • Zofran has been a life saver for me.  I take one about 30 mins before I get out of bed in the morning just so it has a chance to kick in.  As long as I do that and I don't let myself get too nauseas first, it works.  But if I wait until I feel really sick, it's too late.  I usually end up throwing it up before it has a chance to work.  I took it with my last pregnancy, too and my son was fine (he's almost 1 now).  I usually only take it if I have to work that day or if I'm going somewhere.  I like to know at least a couple of times a week that I'm still getting sick for two reasons. 1. It reassures me that LO is still ok in there and 2.  I want to know if I really still need to be taking it.  As far as side effects go, it gives me a raging headache around lunchtime.  Sometimes I wonder which is worse, the vomitting or the headache.  Also, it tends to make me constipated to I just take colace every night before bed with my prenatal and that does the trick.  I hope it works for you and you're feeling better very soon :)

    This.

I tried Zofran and Reglan and they only kind of worked.

1 Unisom at night did wonders. It took my m/s and daily gagginess away and helped me sleep at night.

This. I loved it. I took it every 6-8 hours even if it was working and I wasn't really feeling sick. It took a couple of tries over several weeks to wean myself off it, but I was finally feeling better by about 16 weeks to stop taking it.

  • Thanks again ladies! My first dose of it didn't take the nausea away, but it did take away the urge to puke, so I'm happy with that. The nurse today told me she could switch me to something else if it wasn't enough, so at least that option is open. I guess this weekend will be the true test!

  • Constipation, constipation, constipation. I almost considered urgent care one weekend because it was so painful. It helped with my nausea (I luckily never threw up) but I would only take it when I felt at my worst because of the constipation.
