Never felt letdown?

I'm a FTM, so I don't know if this is really common, but I've never actually felt the letdown. I know that it must happen because my breasts empty after LO nurses and she doesn't act like she has trouble getting the milk in at any point, but never in the 3 months that I've nursed have I felt anything other than DD's sucking. No tingling sensations, no particular relieving of the pressure, nothing! Even after being engorged, I don't feel the relief until DD is done eating altogether. I remember my MW was surprised when DD was 10 days old and she asked me to delatch her for something; she said, 'although I bet you were just starting to experience letdown and now I'm taking her away!' I told her that I never felt anything and she seemed kind of confused. At the time, DD had some latching issues and I was dealing with the baby blues, so I thought that maybe I was just missing something (or that, as a new mom, I just didn't know what sensations I should be noticing). Now we're both much better at BFing and things are running smoothly, but I still have no clue what letdown is supposed to feel like!

Anyone else?

Re: Never felt letdown?

  • I nursed DS for 8+ months and never once noticed letdown.  I also couldn't really tell whether my breasts were full or empty, unless I was REALLY engorged.  My LC said it wasn't common, but wasn't unheard of either.  My only supply issues were related to oversupply as well, so it wasn't really a problem for our BFing journey.

When I'm not experiencing engorgement (so on a more regular basis), I only know whether my breasts full or empty based on how they feel when I squeeze them - I can tell that they have more or less volume in them.

  • I don't think I've felt anything. A nurse asked me about it today and said that I'd know if it happened, so that makes me wonder if I am doing things properly :( And in terms of engorgement and such, other than being bigger and sore, I can't tell when I am engorged and not. I don't see much of a difference between my boobs before and after she eats. So far I know she's eating since she is peeing and pooping, but I'm still worried.

  • We've been nursing for almost 16 months and the only time I feel letdown is when I have my period, and that started about 3 cycles in.  I was really engorged in the beginning, so I always noticed a difference after she ate.  Once that subsided, I didn't notice a difference either.  Now that I've been doing it for such a long time, if I squeeze my breast I can tell the difference pre and post feed.

  • Good to know that I'm not alone! I mean, I figured we're fine since we got into a rhythm and DD doesn't seem to have any nursing problems anymore, but everyone always talked about it so I was wondering...

  • So glad you posted this. I haven't really felt enogorged, but LO is getting plenty. I was feeling letdown at first, but it seems to be fading. I only slightly feel it now when DD is nursing. And the only way to really tell if I am full is to feel and see if they are heavy. It's a little strange.

  • I've never felt a letdown while feeding or pumping.  However, I have felt it in between pumpings - like my breasts are filling up again.  Apparently this is normal.
