Flying with LO

I need pointers from those who have flown with LO!

We're taking our first flight with the kids next week and while DS will be fine with a DVD player and some books, I'm really concerned about DD...she isn't into toys/movies at all and has a short attention span with books. What were some things that you brought with you that kept LO occupied and quiet? The flight's only 2.5 hours and she'll have her own seat with carseat. Thanks!

Re: Flying with LO

  • Bring a few new toys (or toys she hasn't seen in awhile).  Stickers, crayons, and lot's of paper helps us.  She'll spend a lot of time sticking stickers, ripping paper, and coloring.  I also take her to the bathroom at least once.  We look in the mirror and make funny faces, splash (within reason) in the sink, and wash our face (wet a paper towel and rub our face).  We go to the bathroom when she starts to get too fussy.  This always reset's her. Oh, if your kids use straw cups only take ones that are not spill proof on the plane.  The air pressure causes everything to come out like a fountain the whole trip.

    Good luck!

  • Loading the player...
  • Snacks!  Lots and lots of SNACK! We have flown 8 times with DS from 5 months and just recently at 15 months.  We bought a new toy that had sound and had lights.  He only played with it for a few minutes.  He loved playing with the cup and straw our drink came in... But the main things is lots of different snacks!!  Also, the fact that you have the car seat she might sleep. The noise and vibration help.

  • We did a 5 hour flight with DD about a month ago.  We packed a ton of snacks that take a while to eat (blueberries etc).  I got a new book that has flaps to peek under, a few small new toys and some random stuff to keep her interested.  A roll of painters tape was very interesting for her - it isn't too sticky so it won't ruin anything and DD had fun sticking pieces on things. A book light with an on off switch kept her entertained too - clipping it to things and turning it on and off.

  • Thanks for the tips! I raided the dollar aisle of Target yesterday and picked up a ton of stickers and notepads/crayons plus some snacks that should hopefully keep her happy!

  • I don't have much advice, but you are brave!  We love traveling.  But right now, I couldn't imagine flying with my DS.  He always says "doooooown" and just wants to run around!  We flew with him at 8 months though, and it was a breeze!  Good luck!!!  I agree with snacks, new toys, etc.

  • For us, snacks and a sippy cup were key. :)
