Sleeping on tummy

So, rolling.  DD rolled from back to front for the first time yesterday.  Last night I woke up twice to find her sleeping on her belly.  Good thing we already started weaning off he swaddle!  Should I be worried about her rolling herself over in the night?

Re: Sleeping on tummy

  • I think the rule is still lay them on their back, but don't stress it if they roll over...I think at that point they are fine.  Definitely don't swaddle though.

  • my pedi told me it was ok for lo to take naps on his tummy. Not sure about night time sleeping. I would think if lo rolled himself over, it's ok.
  • Definitely stop swaddling, but if they can roll on their own it's really not a big deal.  Mine will only sleep on their stomachs.

  • My girl has slept on her back and side since day one and still hasn't figured out how to roll in either direction.

  • No, if she can roll by herself its fine.  No need to wake her to roll her back over.

  • With DS (baby #1) I would run in to his room throughout the night to flip him to his back....DD (#2) has been on her back for almost a month.....it's all about your comfort level (which I assure you, will increase if this is your first baby!)

  • My DS rolls both ways (one of the early-birds on this board, and he just really wants to move!). Since he is doing that, I let him be if he rolls on his tummy to sleep (he usually does). I still put him down on his back and will continue doing so, but I'm not going to turn him every time he rolls. Especially because we are definitely in the 4 month sleep regression, and I need all the sleep I can get!!

I also have the Angelcare monitor with the motion sensor, which made me a lot more comfortable about allowing him to sleep on his tummy if he puts himself there. Just my opinion, though.
