This is my 3rd kid and my 3rd time with no real diaper bag. I bought one the first time around but it was heavy even while empty and most of the stuff never got used. I carried it for maybe a month before I ditched it.
If you need a bag for daycare, go get a zip top tote from land's end or a nice preschool sized backpack and call it done. You'll have a bag that is more useful and longer lasting than any diaper bag.
I carry a slightly larger sized purse with a diaper and wetbag in it and call it done. I do have some other extra stuff in my car that I'll toss in the stroller if I'm going to the zoo or the mall or some other longer outing. But in general I'd rather haul less stuff and make do than carry around a load of stuff that is rarely used. I have a little zippered tote in my purse to put any small baby stuff in if I think I'll need it.
I bought this one months after DD was born. Mainly because I couldn't find one that I liked. I wanted something gender neutral, not huge, plenty of storage and that could hook to the back of the stroller. This bag is perfect and I love it. We also have a backpack style for when we are hiking, bike riding or spending the day at Sesame Place.

My not a typical purse-like bag. It's from Diaper Dude.
