Another, probably stupid, FTM question...

So I have read that among symptoms to expect during the third trimester is shortness of breath, as the baby gets bigger and starts to crowd your lungs. My stupid question is this: isn't it too early for me to be having this problem? I'm carrying pretty low and most of his movement has been pretty low too, so I'm not sure I understand why walking in the other room has me gasping for air today. It's not my asthma, I'm not coughing... I don't get it.

Thoughts? Anyone else panting like a sweaty fat man from very little exertion?

  • Totally doing the same thing. It was very bizarre for me at first, because I am a runner and always have energy. But just walking up stairs, or even bending down to shave my legs leaves me exhausted. My babe is carrying pretty low as well, but everything is still being pushed up due to baby growing. Your uterus is above your belly button & is pushed up against the lungs. It's totally normal!

  • I am also a FTM, and feel the same way. I think it has to do with the fact that your uterus keeps expanding (even if baby hangs out down low). As our uterus keeps expanding, it shoves organs up there and crowds our lungs. I don't know that baby specifically ever crowds your lungs, I think it is everything else that has been displaced. Just my best guess anyway.

In any case, my baby stays almost entirely below my belly button, and I feel the exact same way. I definitely pant and get all sweaty from doing pretty much anything.

  • I'm carrying pretty low and have been the entire pregnancy, but I definitely have not been able to breathe normally for weeks now. I'd say it's normal.

  • I can't breathe either. I hate it!

  • Totally normal. Also, my OB says that all pregnant women become anemic to some degree and shortness of breath is a symptom of anemia along with that exhausted feeling. I started taking an extra iron supplement and it cleared right up.

  • I started to feel a little winded at 25-26 weeks or so. It's been getting slightly worse with each week. I can't walk to the car without feeling like I jogged half a mile anymore!

  • I find that my shortness of breath doesn't even come from exertion.  I'm having trouble right now and am only sitting at my desk.  My mom (a maternal-newborn nurse) said that everything is just crowding my diaphram.  I feel like I've already had this for months!

I think I'm going to start taking iron supplements.  There's no iron in my prenatals, and I definitely don't think I'm getting enough from my diet.
