Breastfeeding

not feeling empty

I just had my daughter last Friday and I am correcting her latch, but I don't think she is nursing that well.  I hear her swallowing and she is nursing for a good 30 min. or so on one side before falling asleep.  The problem is I still feel engorged after she is done.  We go to the drs tomorrow for her check-up.  I have been pumping to help empty them and getting about 2 oz. total.

I am so bummed if bfing doesn't work out with her.  I bf'd my other daughters for 13 months.  I am not giving up yet...

any tips

Re: not feeling empty

  • If she's peeing and pooping, don't worry about it!  I never feel empty after DS nurses, but the LC did one weighted feed with us yesterday and he had taken 2 1/2 oz!

You might be making the engorgement worse by pumping!  You are telling your body to make more milk than LO needs, so of course you aren't going to feel empty...you have too much milk to start!

  • Put the pump away! It is not your friend right now. By pumping and nursing, you are telling your body that you need more milk than you actually do. This will create all sorts of issues with oversupply and forceful letdown. Your supply should even out by 2 to 3 months and you will begin to feel "empty" after feedings then. If baby is content and peeing/pooping then you should be fine
