NBR- WWYD?

Back story: Today, DD and I went to Pier One to look around and browse. I was getting her back into her carseat and an SUV pulled up with four passengers inside of it. They parked next to the driver's side of my car. They all got out and went into the store. I got DD strapped back in, put away the stroller and started my car. As I was getting ready to pull out of my space, I noticed a small dog pop up in the backseat window. All of the windows of the vehicle were closed and it was close to 100 degrees out today.

I waited about 5 minutes before I called DH at work to get the number for the non-emergency line of our local police station. I told them what I saw, the license plate and make/model of the SUV. They asked if I wanted to stay and talk to the officer when he showed up, but I declined and they understood that I wanted to remain anonymous.

If at any point in the five minutes that I waited to call the police, a passenger of the vehicle had come out and gotten in the car with the dog, or let the dog out, I would have gone about my business. Because no one came out, I decided to make the call.

I feel good about my decision, but I feel guilty at the same time. I know those people didn't intend to hurt their dog, but who knows what would have happened had I not called? What would you have done in my situation?

  • I would have done the same thing and you did the right thing.  This makes me so angry.  Dogs cannot cool themselves in the same capacity we can.  They can only cool themselves by panting and mildly sweating from their paw pads.  On a mild temerature day with sun a vehicle can reach triple digits in 10-20 minutes, even with the windows cracked.  They were basically cooking their dog in an oven, that is cruelty.

  • I have done the same thing and I don't think I would forgive myself if I didn't.

It was about a month ago and the car was parked next to me at the restaurant at noon in Mississippi!

I called the police and they said they would have someone right away.

I don't even care if you are going in a place for less than 5 minutes, you don't leave your dog in the car in the middle of summer with windows rolled up.  I think it should be illegal, at least here in the south with 100+  temperatures.

  • Agreed, you did the right thing. But I think some people take it to far. A friend of mines boyfriend got her a puppy from one of those stores in the mall one time. Went in to get her to suprise her(left the dog in the car while he went to get her from the store). When he got back out with her the cops had broken his car window to get the dog. There was a big crowd watching. She was sure suprised.

  • Having worked at a 911 call center, you absolutely did the right thing. Even if they did end up coming back out, as PP mentioned you have no idea how long they would be inside so taking that first step to initiate help was the right thing. Worse comes to worse, they come back out before the police get there and you call back to let them know it's not necessary.

  • I think what you did is perfect and probably smarter than what I would have thought of.  Hopefully, they just got a recommendation from the officer to open some windows and that is all.  No harm but made the dog much more comfortable and safe.  Hopefully, they learned a lesson and will never do it again.  Leave the poor dog at home.

I'm not sure if that was taken too far. I just think it was an ill-conceived plan. Surprise her at home.

  • That dog could have died if you didn't call. You totally did the right thing, I would've done the same thing.
