Pumping, is this really bad?

Hi, I can only pump 2x/day at work.  I am a teacher and that is how my schedule works out.  Thing is.... after my first session there is really no decent place to clean the pump horns ( I have an Ameda pump, so there is no tubing issues ).  The sinks in the school are disgusting.  I find myself rinsing them while holding them in REALLY hot water, then drying them with a towel and using them again for the next session.  Is this really bad and unsanitary?  I hope this isn't too gross to do or unsafe.  The sinks are just so dirty and never cleaned properly.  Thank you.

  • an extra set of parts for the Medela pump costs under $15.   Not sure how much they'd be for your pump, but may be worth it to buy another set than to stress out about cleaning them properly.   I was using the Medela wipes to clean until I realized how much more expensive it was to buy them instead of more parts.

  • Is there a microwave in your school? you could use the microwave sterilizing bags... it takes 60 seconds and everything is clean and sterilized.
  • Just buy another set. They are super cheap and well worth it to not have to clean during the day.

Or stick in the fridge. That was my other trick. I never even rinsed  =)

  • BM is good for 8 hours at room temp, so you really don't even need to clean them.  I just rinse mine out quickly and reuse later, and have had no problems.  You could put them in a ziplock in a cooler if you're more worried since BM is good for a while that way.

  • I had to do the same thing w/ mine when I was teaching. I just made sure I cleaned them out w/ soapy water at the end of the day, but I agree w/ PP that they're okay for the duration of the school day.

  • That is not bad or unsanitary at all.  I only ever rinsed with hot water between pumping sessions, then cleaned the parts each night.  Remember, BM can stay out at room temp for 8-12 hours.  So even if you didn't rinse the parts (or don't get all the milk), then use them again a few hours later, the milk in there is fine.
  • I used to pump twice a day and only wash the parts at the end of the day.  Breastmilk is good at room temp for 8-12 hours so a little milk in the horns for a few hours is no big deal.  I had a desk drawer with a towel I would set them on so the milk drops wouldn't make a mess.
  • Thank you all so much!  I feel much better about it!
  • I pump in my office at school and don't have water and I use the medela quick wipes. You can try that over the sink or garbage can. You can use the set of pump parts again even after using the wipe.

  • For this reason, I went and bought extra sets. I have 6 pump horns now - its so worth the $!
