subway

i know it was posted in a thread a while ago whether or not you will be going by all the strict rules regarding food, but I have a question about deli meat. I asked my midwife about eating subway sandwich if it was toasted (heated) and she said it's fine if you have it with a vinaigrette as opposed to a heavy sauce - I should have asked her to clarify, but what is the difference between having a light vs. heavy sauce? as long as the meat is heated, it should be fine, right?

Re: subway

  • That's strange, I never associated sauce with being bad. Not sure on that.

You can also have them microwave the meat seperately for about 30 seconds and then toast it. I just don't feel like toasting it gets it to that 165 degrees it needs to be. It never seems very warm to me. Just another way to be doubly sure it's killing all that bacteria Big Smile

  • my np told me no meats from subway or other sandwich shops. no meats from the deli counter at the store either. only lunch meat thats prepackaged from the store. not sure why the sauce would matter.

  • im wondering if it has anything to do with the sauce curdling? i know it doesnt get hot enough for that, but.... who knows???

  • Maybe the sauce contains raw egg, like mayonnaise does? Then again, that should be pasteurized, and the heat should kill bacteria in that, too...

But that's the stuff that has the most preservatives and salt and crap. Wouldn't freshly sliced, good quality deli meat be healthier? Now, Subway - I understand that. But prepackaged stuff over a real deli counter? That's just weird.

  • My interpretation if I heard that would be that the heavy sauce has more fat and calories, so she was recommending the vinaigrette because it would be a healthier option. Perhaps I'm off! If the sauce goes bad when heated, I'd imagine that Subway wouldn't put it on the sandwich to begin with? If you want the heavy sauce and are in doubt, ask for it on the side.

  • Maybe she just wants you to be healthy. It's the bacteria in the meat thats dangerous. But as long as you heat it to 100 degrees its fine.

I'm thinking it's because vinegrette is healthier. They add most sauces after they heat it, so the spoilage wouldn't make much sense.
