Only letting down when LO nurses?

Anyone else having this issue? It doesn't matter how long I pump, or how long I am away from LO. The only time I let down is when she is nursing. Is this normal?? it makes me fell like I am drying up, but I feel super full! and I am pumping enough.

  • I need some more information.

What type of pump are you using? How long are you pumping for? How old is your baby? How long has this been happening? Are you getting anything or just not "enough"?

  • I have a Medela. I however do not have an outlet here at work in the restroom, so I use the manual pump. 10-15 minutes on each side every 3 hours. LO is 8 weeks and this has been happening for a while. It is very rare for me to let down while I am pumping. Now that I am taking Fenu Greek I am back to getting 2 ounces from each side when I pump. Except for this morning, I only got a few drops.

  • Are your breasts full when you try to pump? Have you tried massage and compression?

Have you tried different settings on your pump? I found I had better let down and pumping on lower levels  (3 or 4).

Plus-Drink water when you start pumping. They say swallowing helps for a number of reasons (google or go to kellymom.com.)

Also, if you are tense or stressed, that can keep from releasing your milk. Try to relax your shoulders, etc.Let out deep breaths.

I also sometimes let down later....sometimes at 20min...ugh!

They also say to look at pictures of your baby or listen to a baby crying (record yours or try you tube....although that may be awkward in your work bathroom!)

  • I very rarely get a let down while pumping.  I always get out 5 oz though in less than 10 minutes.  I could go longer but that's all I need at a sitting.

I do however get a letdown every time he's nursing after about 20-30 seconds.

Yes. I have tried all of these things. I find it strange that I get plenty of milk without a let down.

  • I don't feel it,  and these times when I don't feel it, I don't get that much milk. And the milk is very thin and watery.
