weight/size question

maybe i am just freaking out just a little bit, my MiL and a whole lot of random strangers have been commenting on how little Lux is.

i get 'my baby was born that size!!' a whole lot.

she was 8lb 3oz and 19in at birth. she was 39weeks along and i had a scheduled c section. she lost the normal amount of weight while in the hospital, and slowly gained those few ounce back, but then stalled for 2 weeks, then at the 3 week check up she sprung up a whole pound. at her 2 month weigh in she was at 10lb 4oz and 21 1/2in, and i weigh her on the Wii fit, and a few days ago she was just under 11lbs and i measured her at 22 1/2in, her 4 month old appointment is on sept 14th. i checked out the 4 month old stats page, and it seems like only the preemies weigh about 11-12lbs at 4 months.

she is just past 15 weeks old.

is my lil Lux really that small?

i have been breastfeeding exclusively, and i feed on demand.  she is starting to teeth, and has recently started becoming fussy at the breast, AND bottle. there were days where she would gobble down 4 oz of milk in a bottle, and now when fussy she spends no more than 10-15 mins suckling, and then has no interest in a bottle after. she seems to have been becoming more aware of her surroundings, and i actually catch her looking around with wide curious eyes when on the breast.

she still moves around, and is very bright eyed and curious, and vocalizing well. she just seems 'small'.

i never really thought too much on it, since, so long as she is healthy and gaining weight, with wet and dirty diapers i shouldn't worry. but i am starting to become concerned.

any tips, or reassurance would be well appreciated!!

Re: weight/size question

  • She may just be a petite baby. At her appts has she been following along the same growth curve? For ex, DD always falls in the upper 90th percentile. Her Dr said that as long as they are growing at a constant rate for them and hitting their milestones, then they don't focus too much on how big (in my DD's case) or how little. Every baby is different.

  • Her weight really doesn't matter so much if you are BFing.  What is important is that her percentile increases, or at the very least, stays the same or doesn't drop.  I am pretty sure my daughter is only a little over 11 pounds right now (she was 3 weeks early, but wasn't really that tiny).

  • If you trust your ped and he seems to think she's doing well, then I wouldn't stress too much.  As PPs said, it's about the curve. We just had our 3mo and our LO is in the 75th percentile for height and weight - but she's been there since her 5 day check up.  She was born in the 50%'s for both.  As long as she's gaining and growing steadily, it's OK.  Do you have other children? Were you a small baby?  Baby size often runs in families, so if your other babies were small and you were small, she is probably just petite!

Don't stress over it if she seems to be hitting her milestones on time.  If you want to keep an eye on it, there is an app you can get and several places where you can input her growth (h/w) and it will save it for you and show you where she falls on the curve once you have multiple dates for entry. We BF (EP) on demand too so I know it can be stressful, but seriously, your boobs can hold a lot more milk than it seems possible :D

  • My DS is almost 4 months and EBF and he is the same size as a friend's DD who is 13 months. Their little girl is just on the small size and she was EBF for the first 12 months.  Don't worry!

  • My first two we're in the 10th and 15th their who lives for weight and my first was ff my second bf. They are both happy and healthy boys. Someone has to be on the lower end and honestly with the childhood obesity rates in this country going up I'd rather my kids be bellow average for weight.
As long as she's gaining and is healthy and happy ignore everyones comments.

  • Make sure you are looking at the WHO growth chart. The other growth chart is better for formula feed babies. As long as your lo is gaining weight I would worry. DS1 was in the 10th percentile. He is now three and very healthy,
  • DD won't have another appointment until she's 4 months, so IDK exactly how much she weighs, but she's not that far off of the 12lb mark and she's almost 13 weeks. Her head is in the 25th &ile, though, which might explain why she weighs a little less than babies with more average head sizes. Her smaller head also makes her look smaller overall (I actually just had someone ask me if she was a month old, and she's almost 3 months!). I mean, she looks totally proportional, but there it is. I think there's a lot that goes into weight anyway - like bone density or head size, for example, so it's not just fat from eating and the such.

Sounds like you're doing a great job - LO will catch up eventually :)

  • From a momma with a little guy, your LO is probably ok.

Both my boys were born under 7lbs, their weights are between 5-10%, and the height is between 10-15%.  They are small boys.  When I see other 3 month-old's I can see how small Lucas looks but he is growing, hitting his milestones, and I stopped worrying since I can't do anything about genetics.

  • DD is also a peanut. She was in the 7th percentile at her last weight check. She stays between the 7th-10th percentiles though consistently so the pedi is not concerned. Even when I was pregnant with her and had monthly growth scans, she was always in the 10-20th percentile. She weighted 10 lbs and 2 oz at 2.5 months (she went in for a weight check 2 weeks after her 2 month appt). She is now 3 months and I would guess she's about 10 lbs 8 oz or maybe 11 lbs at the most. The pedi is not concerned so we go back at 4 months.

If it makes you feel better, my son (other than at birth) has always been in the 75th or 90th percentile for height/weight/head circumference. He was 5 lbs 15 oz when he was born and 20 inches. He left the hospital at 5 lbs 10 oz. DD was 7 lbs 3 oz and 20 inches and she left the hospital at 6 lbs 11 oz. They were both feed BM, although DS had some special formula at one point. Now at his 2 yr check up he is actually obese because for the first time ever his height doesn't match his weight (75th for height and 90th for weight).

  • DD#1 was 7 lbs 6 ounces when she was born as was 12 lbs exactly at her 4 month appt. She had breast milk until 9 months and then formula until 1 yr. DD#1 was 55th percentile for height and 35th for weight at her 2 year appt last week.

DD#2 was 8 lbs 6 ounces when she was born and looks like she'll be about 12 lbs at her 4 month appt in a few weeks. She is just on breast milk right now.

    No worries!  :)

  • i want to thank all you mommies for reassuring me!!

she seems very active and healthy, just kinda skinny/lean. and at her last appointment (2 month) the doctor noted how strong she was and how healthy her heart and lungs sounded.

i just didn't think she was big enough, but she seems fine, and i am just worrying for nothing.

    thanks! :D
