So my aunt purchased two matching, adorable bassinets for the twins! It was so sweet of her. My mom mentioned the fact that they may only need one bassinet to sleep together. Only, my thought process is this: hope for the best, expect the worst. What if they are born at a normal weight (like 6 lbs or so)? Then you're looking at 12 lbs worth of baby sleeping in one bassinet, and its max is 15 lbs. What do MoM's recommend? Is co-sleeping necessary? I don't want to traumatize the poor things by separating them after they've been in the womb together for 9 months. But it's important for them to be safe too right? I was planning on bassinets for the first couple months and then transitioning to their cribs....Thanks!
Re: Is co-sleeping a must-do?
We did a little bit at the hospital, but we didn't at home. They slept in Rock'n'Plays most of the time and by the time they transitioned to cribs they were too long for us to feel comfortable putting them in side-by-side. Plus, they don't roll yet but they do wiggle around.
Ours were each around 7 pounds at birth.
I never co-slept my twins. They came straight home from the hospital and right into their own individual cribs. I didn't even sleep them in my room. I am a very light sleeper and they were so gassy and made so much noise in their sleep, I never would have been able to sleep with them in my room. And sleep was like gold back in those days, would have done anything for it.
Even if you do decide to co-sleep in the beginning because they are on the small size and can fit in a bassinet together, I would keep the second bassinet. They will only be able to fit in it together for a short amount of time and you will need that second bassinet within a week or two. My girls were right under 5lbs each at birth and I had them napping in a pack in play together with the bassinet part raised, after about 3 weeks I had to lower it because together they hit the weight limit and it was trying to sag in the middle.
