Considering DH and I are trying to save $ for baby, does anyone know of a generic brand I can buy to replace Heartgard for my dachsund? I've heard there are other options out there that don't cost as much. TIA!
Have you looked into online pet med stores? Diapers.com has an affiliate Wagg, that is supposed to be cheaper. I don't know about generics though.

Check with your vet. For one thing, hw preventative requires a prescription and you'll want to make sure that your vet is willing to write one for you. (Rx meds are a large percentage of the revenue in many vet clinics, so there are places that might give you a hard time about getting your meds elsewhere.) Your vet also might offer price matching.
For another thing, not all hw preventatives contain the same medication. We use Tri-Heart, which prevents against heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. Other meds, like Sentinel or Interceptor, also protect against whipworms. If you live in an area with a high risk of whipworm infection, you'll want to make sure your dog is protected from that as well.
That said, I've heard that Costco generally has the lowest prices for pet meds.

We've used Tri-heart and Heartguard. Not sure which is cheaper, but I think there might have been a recent recall for tri-heart or something.
I always google for rebates or coupons. Looks like there's a Heartguard rebate if you don't end up with other options.
