WWYD: new job related

Currently, I'm a software consultant and I travel 75% of the time. I hate it, even more now that I'm pregnant. I told work that I would only be available until the end of October. At that point I was planning to substitute teach until I couldn't anymore.

I used to be a teacher and spent all summer tring to find a teaching job. A school I interviewed with just called me and said a position is opening up and they hoped I was still available. It's a great district, close to my house and I would love to work there.

Would you accept it? Tell them you're pregnant and see if they're still interested? Is it realistic to even think about working Fall 2013 with triplets about 6 months old? Or am I resigned to be a SAHM?

Re: WWYD: new job related

  • (easy for me to say with only twins on the way, and no actual mom experience yet!) I would take it! They can't not hire you because you're pregnant, so I wouldn't even make a big deal about it. Accept the job and then tell your boss you're expecting when you first meet with him/her and have some tentative plans in place for your leave. I started a new job at 8 weeks pregnant and was so, so nervous to tell my boss, but he was very supportive when I told him at 13 weeks.

6 months triplets are going to be a handful, that's for sure, but as long as you can arrange and financially support childcare for them, I would think you should be OK. Teaching is a great job to have with a family because of the short year, and administrators are used to teachers needing to take time off for maternity leave.

Like I said, I may be being too pie in the sky about this (the triplet moms can give you a much better opinion), but I think this sounds like a great opportunity for your family, and is certainly an improvement over your current work situation.

  • One thing to consider - mom's of triplets seem more likely to go out of work early, and I don't think your job would be protected by FMLA because you have to be working for a certain amount of time before that becomes applicable.  Is this a district that you would want to work for in the future?  If so, I would think very hard about the likelihood of you going back in the fall because if you only work for a few months now and then back out of going back in the fall that could give them a negative impression and make them not want to rehire you in the future.  Not that I would blame you one bit for only working for a few more months and/or not going back in the fall, but just something to consider.

As far as being a SAHM, that's entirely up to you and your husband.  Even if your paycheck doesn't cover daycare, if you guys can afford daycare anyway and you want to work, then work and don't feel guilty about it.  If you can find an in-home daycare with more then one DCP then maybe they could accommodate triplets (an in-home provider is only allowed to have 2 infants, but if there are 2 certified adults then they're allowed to have 3 infants).  In my area a center daycare for the twins would run about $2500/mo, but our in-home daycare is only $1175/mo (we're in a HCOL area).

  • Realistic to work then-yes definitely. I went back when my trio was 4 months old but had been off work for 5 months.  But I would not consider looking for a new job while pg with triplets especially because your leave will most likely be unpaid and you probably won't qualify for FMLA. Stay at your current job and take your leave if you can, job search after your kids are born and then figure it out later.

  • Well, bummer.... 3 conflicting opinions!

Unfortunately, staying at my current job isn't an option. If I asked to be reassigned to something else (so I can be taken off the road), I will be put in tech support taking calls - which would be my worst nightmare of a job. On top of that it's a 3 hour round trip drive for me and that would really suck. Plus, we have less than 50 employees so they don't have FMLA anyway. All in all, it's a terrible place. LOL

I guess I'll just have to weigh all the options. I would hate to take this job and burn bridges though if I don't return. So many things to worry about!

Thanks for all your responses! At least I have some time to think about it.

  • This job is for Fall 2013? If so, I don't think there's any reason to tell them you're pg. You won't be pg anymore by the time you take the job.
