NBR: Tips for a Successful Yard Sale? (XP)

We're having on this Saturday and I've done many with my mom before growing up but never on my own. And this time is a lot different than all those years growing up - we can't have it set up before hand because it has to be in our front yard, etc. What do you think helps make a sale more successful? TIA!

  • How about a cooler filled with water bottles / soda cans?  People like free things and being generous to your customers may encourage them to purchase something / more.

  • I would just suggest two things. Make sure everything is organized and doesn't just look "thrown out there", and price your items. We have friends that have a garage sale every year and it is the biggest mess of junk, with no prices on anything. They invited us to sell with them one year and it drove me nuts. You get every single person asking "how much for this?" I have no idea how this does not drive them insane. I also prefer not to shop at garage/yard sales with no prices. I don't want to be bothered with asking the price on every item that interests me either.

I guess my last suggestion is just to have good signage to get people to your place. I hate turning in from a street for a sign and then not being able to find the sale once I am in the neighborhood because they only put out the one sign. If people can't find you, they won't buy.

If you do those things, yard sales will ususally go pretty smooth and be easy. We had our first sale "on our own" in the spring, and it went quite well. Good luck!

  • I agree with PP- organization and having stuff priced is huge.  Also, if you really want to move stuff, make sure to price low and be willing to bargain, especially if someone buys a lot of stuff.  A lot of times you'll make more money overall, because people are more willing to buy stuff at $1 or less and will buy stuff they didn't necessarily need just because it's a good deal.

  • Thanks ladies! I got stickers to price things and they'll definitely be priced to sell, I want as little as possible coming back into my house! Maybe the leftovers will just get thrown in the trunk and taken straight to Goodwill, lol.
