I have a scheduled section September 20th and I'm a FTM. Would it be helpful for me to start a stool softener like a week ahead of time so I don't pass out from pain the first time I go #2? Any other things I need to know that they don't tell you?
My doctor prescribed a stool softener for me. Starting the evening after my c-section, I took one pill once every evening. I also tried to eat foods that were high in fiber. My first post-op bowel movement wasn't that bad.
Take it in advance and every day after your csection. How effective it will be will depend on your pain management, as long as you take certain narcotics you will be constipated.

Have you taken stool softeners before? I never get constipated, so it's waaaay too stimulating for me. I get very bad diarrhea from them. I was fine without it when I had my son, but the nurse this time talked me into taking one...horrible diarrhea...
I think you should talk to your doctor. Good luck!

I didn't take any before (but c-section was unplanned). They started me on a stool softener the day after surgery and continued daily while I was there for 4 days. My 1st bowel movement didn't come until 5 days later (after I'd been off percocet for 24 hours) and it wasn't bad at all. I have pretty intense gas pains though, so my Dr. recommended continuing stool softener.. which I haven't yet and bowel movements are still fine... just the occ. gas pains.
I took stool softeners starting after c-section. I was told that they wouldn't do anything to help you prior to the c-section since it's the surgery itself and moving your bowels around and narcotics that cause the problem in the first place. This time, I'm also bringing Miralax and fiber pills with me. I didn't have a BM until about 6 days afterwards last time and it was horrible, DH almost took be to the ER.
Re: Stool softeners...
This
I took it for 3 days before my c/s, because I was actually constipated and didn't plan to do that.
I didn't have a BM till 5 days PP, despite taking a softener post c/s every morning and every night.
