choosing between k'tan and ergo

I am looking at getting a k'tan or an ergo. ds is 8 weeks old and over 13 pounds..i feel he will outgrow an infant insert with the ergo quickly but if I use the ergo without it looks like he would be swallowed up..the k'tan looks good for now, but will i like it as he get's heavier? the irrational side of me wants to get both! I really can't though $ wise..can someone give me some input on what is best to do? thank you!

  • You're going to be able to use the ergo longer than a ktan so I'd go for that personally.

Agreed.  There are lots of other options out there as well...are you open to other things?  Not that there's anything wrong with the ergo - you just didn't sound sold on it.

I just want to start using it rightaway. ds doesn't spread his legs open enough yet to use the ergo so he would need something in the meantime..i think it's a waste for me to get the infant insert being that we are mostly going to use it outside and it will be way to warm for the next 2 months  here in nj...i read rolling up a receiving blanket and putting it under him will help till he get's alittle bigger..has anyone done that and is it comfortable? The K'tan looks great for now but looks like I will  need something with more support as the baby get's heavier.. what other options do you suggest? I really don't want to go more than $100..

  • I have the K'tan.  It worked wonderfully for the first couple of months (and very easy to use compared to other wraps IMO), but as DD put on more weight I wanted a carrier with more support.  I started looking at Mei Tais and SSCs.  The size adjustability with these is something you just don't get with a K'tan.  DD's just now getting big enough to be comfy in an Ergo (I never bought the insert).  With some of the other MTs and SSCs I've tried I still have to put a blanket under her bottom to get an okay fit.  Look for deals on used carriers so maybe you could get two.  Smile

  • I have them both.  Out of all the carriers I've tried over the last 9y, they are my favorite.  I use the Ktan exclusively for the first 4 months, then I try out the Ergo at that point.  My last one was short in the Ergo though, and it just kind of smooshed her face weird at 4mo, so I still used the Ktan quite a bit beyond that.  I use the Ergo the most now, at almost 20mo and 24lbs.  I used the Ktan just the other day though with no issues.  If it were ME, I'd get the Ktan now, and try to get the Ergo around Christmas (ask for help buying it as a gift maybe if you can't spring for it).

this sounds like a good idea and i'll probably do this. If i knew i was having a 3rd child in the future i would just get both!

  • K'tans don't have a very long age lifespan, so I would say Ergo. But,have you looked at a Beco over an Ergo?  If you are sold on the Ergo, look into using a rolled up towel or blanket rather than the infant insert.
  • The k'tan IS cheaper, and we had to get it because DD's legs were (and still are) too short to stick out of the mei tai; the mei tai is a lot like an ergo, just without the clips. Anyway, she absolutely HATES the frog leg position and really seems to prefer having freedom for her legs, which the k'tan allowed us to do. So far it's worked great for us and I really like it. My only dislike is that there's really no good way to wear them on your back in the k'tan.
