I am thrilled! I had my VBAC and couldn't be happier. The recovery has been SOOOOOOOO much better than I could have imagined. Wow.
I was 41+5 weeks pregnant and had a repeat scheduled c-section for the following day. My OB had agreed to let me VBAC but refused to do any type of induction.
On Sunday morning at 2am I had my first contraction that felt completely different from my Braxton Hicks. I fell back asleep and woke up 45 minutes later with another one. They gradually got closer, but I didn't call my OB and decided to stay home as long as I could. Sunday night, we dropped our 2 year old off at my girlfriends house and I went and got in our heated pool. It was a welcome relief.
By 10pm, my mom who is a former midwife arrived from out of state and I continued to labor at home (mostly in my bath tub). At 7am on Monday, we decided to go to the hospital because my contractions weren't getting closer and I was getting really tired.
My OB admitted me and on arrival I was only 3 cm. By the time I made it to my room I was already 4-5cm. I refused to have my water broken at that time because I didn't want to be forced to stay in bed. My hospital had an AWESOME shower and I used it frequently. By 5pm I made it to 8cm and requested the epidural and had my water broken.
At 9:30 pm, it was time to push and the nurse had me do 2 sets of "practice" pushes. Then I did one set of real pushes and started vomiting uncontrollably. That was all it took and my son was out in less than 15 minutes. The doctor was in the sleep room and made it to the birth but was still scrubbing when my son flew out. The nurse ended up catching him. He was 8lbs and 8 ounces.
I am glad I ended up with my VBAC and am positive that because of my prolonged labor, if I had gone to the hospital any sooner - my dream might not have come true. I had a HORRIBLE L&D nurse who was very unsupportive of my delayed use of medications and my VBAC plan. She kept telling me the pain was going to get worse and then I'd have 2 hours or more of hard pushing to do. She also told me in labor that she had 3 c-sections and wouldn't have done it any other way.
I did end up with a second degree tear from the fast delivery, but it's nothing like an abdominal incision from a c-section. I loved that holding my 2 year old never hurt. It was worth all the pain to get this recovery.
Re: Successful VBAC
Congratulations! And I am so glad you didnt let that awful nurse bully you in to meds or other intervention sooner than you wanted them
That nurse sounds terrible; so glad you didn't let her get to you!
