Anyone else looking at cars?

I have a Mazda 3 at the moment which by all means would be fine when baby comes around. We also have 2 dogs and take them with us when we travel around 3 times a year maybe? as of now by the time we get the dog us and our stuff in the car it is full so we can't imagine what we will do when we have to take baby stuff also. We have been talking about getting a new car for a while now and decided that we would actually test drive some today.
We were looking at the ford escape, chevy equinox, kia sportage and Honda crv. We were actually very surprised when the lady showed us the subaru outback. We both really like it and it has a ton more features and lots more room then the other cars. We're thinking we may take my car tomorrow to get appraised and maybe make the trade in did I mention it's also on sale at the moment? so I was just wondering if other moms to be had been looking at cars or anything?

Re: Anyone else looking at cars?

  • We got a new car last summer when I was pregnant with DS. We ended up with the ford expedition because I wanted the bucket seats. We also plan on having a larger family and I didn't want to get a new car, then need a new one when we had a 3rd, 4th child.

  • Right before my first pregnancy we upgraded from a little car to a Chevy Trailblazer SS.  It was great for the two dogs and we figured a car seat, baby gear, dog gear, and suitcases would fit just fine.  Well, two months later we learned that we were expecting twins.  The car seats and dogs fit comfortably but pack-n-plays, etc. were/are an issue.  Now with baby 3 on the way? Yikes!  The girls will be forward facing starting the day new baby comes home, which should help.  (It should be right after their second birthday.)  But we will be packing light anywhere we go!

  • I have a Honda Accord right now and I'm pretty sure that will be plenty big for a baby and baby gear since this is our first and we don't have animals. However, I want a new different car since hauling baby gear in and out of a car trunk isn't all that fun ( I know that sounds minuscule but lifting it up and out instead of just pulling it out is a bit tricky with strollers and such).  My hubby really likes the Jeep Cherokees, and I want to try the Honda Pilot but we haven't driven anything yet. Good luck!!

  • We are hoping to test drive minivans this weekend.  We bought a CR-V after DS1 was born, and while we could fit 3 car seats in the back, it would be really tight!  Plus, I'm not sure how I feel about one of my boys sitting that close to a newborn.  A minivan would make life so much easier.  I'm in love with the idea of pushing a button and the doors opening.

    Married to J since 5/05, Mommy to T (10/08), L (08/10) and C (02/13) who was born at home.

  • We got a new Jeep Grand Cherokee after DD was born. We've had it a year and I LOVE it. We had a Subaru Outback before the Jeep, and I had issues getting the bucket carseat in and out of the small door. Also, the passenger seat had to be up so far to make room for the carseat, that no one could sit there for a llonger trip. That was the older station wagon type style, and I know the new ones are more like crossovers, so they are probably roomier. Those are just a couple of things to think about before you buy. Take a carseat to try if you can!

  • Me and my husband had a Scion Tc, which was not going to cut it since I am pregnant with twins. We looked at the CRV and RAV-4, but it just seemed to small for a family of four and pets. We decided on a Toyota Highlander last week, and it is so nice! 7 seater, with decent gas mileage, and a decent price. I definitely suggest looking at the midsize SUV market.

  • We bought a car a year ago planning for the day we had a family because I didn't want to have to get another car down the road.  We have an 80 pound dog who takes up a whole bench seat by herself and my old Mountaineer wasn't going to cut it (plus it was getting up there in age and developed its own "personality").  We ended up with a Ford Flex and I LOVE it.  LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  It is basically a minivan without sliding doors - no offense to any of you minivan mamas out there but I just was not ready for that step.

The 3rd row folds flat like an SUV's "trunk" does when not in use and the 2nd row on our model is individual buckets.  Have I mentioned that I love it?  :)

  • We bought a Chevy Tahoe last year when my car died, in hopes we would be having a baby soon.  We also have an 80 lb golden retriever.  At the time, we were living in new Orleans and drove to NJ to visit our families 2 times a year.  We have since moved back to NJ, but we're still an hour from family and drive there almost every weekend, so we are still happy with the purchase. Plus, I feel safer being high up. Good luck,  I love new cars!

  • I have to start by saying minivans are awesome.  PP poster was right about the whole door opening at the push of a button feature. So nice!  Plus the sliding doors are really nice for getting babies in & out. Really, any car where you don't ben over to reach the car seat is nice.

Of the ones you mentioned, my BFF had a CRV and loved it. They just had their 3rd and got a different car and she really, really misses it.

We had drove Kia Sedonas (vans) for about 10 years and they were great. At one point we considered the Sportage but it just wasn't as comfy.

I never thought of this. I tired to highlight the lifting out vs just pulling out but can't figure our how to highlight it with the iPad. I agree though! It'd be much nicer to just be able to take things out instead of lifting it all in and out

  • I know lots of people who swear by Subaru Outbacks. They are dependable, last a long time, well made, and apparently (I've never driven one) good on snow!

  • I'd love to be car-shopping but DH will not have that until we have at least 2 if not 3 babies and since this is number 1... I am stuck with my 08 Dodge Avenger for a while... BUT - At the auto show I saw that the new dodge journey has a seat option for built-in boosters!! To me that is SO exciting! Also, they have third row seatng and since DH works at Chrysler I get a discount...

All I can honestly say is that my household is supported by American Auto Companies... In Michigan it is a bigger deal than other places, but help support Americans and Buy American... Even if Honda is made in Ohio or Illinois or wherever, bottom line profits still go out of the country. =) Happy car hunting!

  • We are looking at the Honda Odyssey right now.  We have an SUV but want better gas milage when we travel.  Plus, we may end up with one more before our oldest is in a booster seat and fitting three full sized carseats in the back of any vehicle comfortably is no good.

  • We purchased a ford escape in march and I am in love with it!!!! I currently nanny and drive kids around in it and there is plenty of room for the car seat and the kid.. I just feel safer in a larger vehicle! Good luck on your search!

  • Subaru manufactures a GOOD car.  My DH knows, as he drives them competitively, year-round, on some sketchy surfaces (gravel, asphalt, snow, ice).  We NEVER get caught in bad weather during the winter, and never have to worry about getting stuck in the snow/ice/etc. as a result of the AWD.

Friends of ours, who I guess were thinking about starting their family when they bought this (then put the brakes on the baby-making), bought a Mazda 5.  It's like a miniature mini-van.  Still has the sliding door, and lots of space in the rear, but isn't quite as cumbersome as an actual minivan.

We are in no position to be car-shopping ourselves at the moment, though.  We just got ourselves a used Audi A3, and are simply relieved that both our vehicles now work (yay) and have four doors (yay) for ease of getting car seats in and out!  Good luck, and have fun in your search!

  • I got a new Chevy Equinox last July & I love it. After having it for a year and a half, I have no complaints. We have an 80lb lab that loves to ride around with me and I shouldn't have any issues fitting her and a carseat once the time comes.

My sister used to have a Subaru Outback & she loved it.

We have a Jeep Liberty.  I was not sure if I wanted to keep buying Jeeps or if we should get something else until we were in an accident.  The thing is built like a tank.  DH was driving and a deer jumped into the path of the car from a bank on the interstate.  We were going over 80 miles an hour and the deer bounced off the front of the car spun through the air and then hit the back.  There was damage to the Jeep but I did not feel the impact and my dog did not even wake up.  After that experience, I am sold on Jeeps, now if I culd convince DH to drive slower.

  • We bought a VW Tiguan a few months ago right after my old car died.  It's basically a mini-version of the VW Toureg SUV and I love it!  It will be the perfect baby care and have enough room for all the baby stuff along the way.   I love the fact that it still manuvers like a car and that the gas mileage is good.  VWs are also known to be very safe, which was another factor in us choosing the car we did.

  • We'd love to get a new one, but our car is paid off and still runs perfectly.  We've decided to try to hold out another 2 years until we buy a house so that we're completely debt free when we get apply for a mortgage.

(We only have 1 car at the moment- we live in NYC and there's no need for another.  I take public transit everywhere and H drives to work)

  • We are probably getting a Suburban or Yukon XL.  We need to able to seat 7 or 8 and still have lots of truck space.  That basically leaves a mini van or large SUV.  We are going to consider an minivan but I think the Suburban is a better fit for us because we will drive in snow and ice and do some off road driving.  It's going to be a big change from my Prius which I love!

Blah, same with me.  My car is paid off and perfectly fine but I have been itching for an SUV.  My H put it in our long term budget for 2-ish years for now and keeps telling me that he would rather get a really nice SUV in a couple years than a moderate one now, but I am still impatient!

I never thought about how annoying it is going to be lifting stuff out of the trunk as opposed to sliding it out.  (I think this qualifies as a first world problem...)

  • We knew we'd need to upgrade when we had kids as I was in a Jetta before.  We probably could have pulled it off, but the backseat was microscopic.  It died about a year ago, so we went ahead and bought our family car then.

I got a Honda Pilot - I liked all the holders and organizers throughout the car, that it has a third row, but everything folds completely flat if you don't need the rear seats.  It's great now with two dogs, and I'll be glad we have that third row space when we need to hit the road with a car seat, luggage, two dogs, a stroller, etc.

  • I want to look at cars, but I don't want a loan...so it's going to be a while.  We have an older Suburban.  It seats 8.  We have 6 people in our family...we're getting close to maxing it out.  I want a 12 or 15 passenger van.  I was just looking this morning and there are only 18 full size vans within 75 miles of us, and several of them were just 8 seaters.

  • This might be an unconventional idea, but have you thought about renting a larger vehicle for the few times per year you'd need to haul the whole kit and kaboodle? That way you're saving yourself the cost of the car itself, the higher insurance rate, and the gasoline that goes with it. Not to mentioning limiting your environmental footprint. I do hear good things about the Outbacks, though!

  • I have a 2 seater Audi  TT convertible so that is definitely going to have to go! LOL! It's paid off though so I am hoping we can just keep it as a fun third car.... haha. I love it.  I bet it is going to be hard to get into once I start showing a lot.... it's hard to get in and out of even when I am not pregnant!!
  • OP - are you me three years ago? LOL

When I was pg with DD, we had a Mazda3 and two dogs (well, we still do, actually) and I knew we'd need something bigger to haul the dogs, baby and all our gear to our parents house and on vacations.

We pretty much looked at the same cars you have, and ended up buying the 2010 Subaru Outback. We love it - great gas mileage, drives nice, lots of room (though we also bought a pod to go on top). We had a pretty severe winter right after we bought it, and it was worth its weight in gold just for getting us through that. Ours has over 60000 miles on it, and has had been completely reliable.

We've had it for about 2 1/2 years now and we fully expect that it will be just fine with 2 kids (we just may have to use the pod a little more!)

This is what we're doing (we are a two Prius household), unless I have twins with this pregnancy. We have family who only visits once or twice a year so we should be able to get away with it. I would rather find out for sure that it doesn't work than upgrade out of one or two perfectly good cars unneeded.

  • We have a Subaru Impreza (similar size/layout to the Mazda 3) right now that's our main car, and my beaten up Jeep Cherokee that's our occasionally-used second car (DH and I commute together for the most part).  The Impreza would be ok for daily stuff, but not for trips with two kids, plus a rear-facing convertible seat gets a little dicey in there- we had it in the middle when DD was RF.

We'll probably trade in the Jeep (*sniffle*) for a Subaru Forester, we've loved our Impreza.  I've also looked at bit at other Jeep models (mostly the Grand Cherokee), and friends of ours just got a Honda CR-V that they're thrilled with.

  • We HAVE to upgrade... THANK GOODNESS! Right now I have a Chrysler T&C minivan and I hate it! I know this sounds ridiculous, but it's so "boring" and makes me feel super unattractive. Embarrassed

But it only seats 7 total, so we're maxed out and with #6 on the way we need to get something that seats 8.

So far we're both really loving the GMC Acadia. :)
