Baby Names

Opinions on "old lady names"

MH and I are planning to TTC soon and of course this makes me start thinking of baby names!  Our daughter is Clara after my great grandma, so in staying with the theme I have been looking at old lady names for future baby #2.  I want an old lady name with a twist so it's a bit more modern!  Here's my list right now!

Amealea

Myldryd

Ethyl

Vyola

Dooryse

What do you think?  Thanks so much!

Re: Opinions on "old lady names"

  • Is there a reason behind the all the Ys? I really dislike the names spelled the way you have them listed. It just looks "wrong"

    I Love (spelled this way)

    Amelia and Viola

  • (Tip: Read the link in the post below this one ("If you are new to the board..."). One of the things on the list is that replacing other vowels with "y" is usually not applauded on this board.)

Having given that tip, I think the names Amelia, Ethel, and Viola are pretty. I'm not much of a fan of the other two. Remember that the only thing that would distinguish your Vyola from Viola would be that it looks different on paper and your daughter would forever have to be spelling her name for people. If you're shouting it on the playground or when the teacher calls on her in class, it will sound exactly the same.

  • I'm not a fan of the spellings. At all.

I like Amelia (or Amalia) but only spelled that way.

I had no idea Dooryse was Doris except when I read a PP.

  • No Ethyl. My great-aunt was named Ethyl and kids at school would do the thing where they would lisp her name to make it sound like "A**-hole." It was so bad and she hated her name so much growing up that she changed it when she reached an adult.

I'm not the biggest fan of such odd spellings, it's going to make it tough for her as her name will never be spelled right (take it from someone who has a fairly common last name in my area, but had a double "f" and double "n" when most didn't and EVERYTHING was always spelled wrong, it is very frustrating).

I like Amelia and Viola best.

  • I love old lady names, but I hate the way you've gone crazytown on the spellings.

Is Amealea supposed to be Amelia? Amalia?

Mildred, Ethel and Doris are not my favorites (even spelled correctly).

I think Viola is absolutely lovely. Vyola is awful.

  • How about Ethylene? Sounds even more oldlady to me! ;

I don't really care for old lady names so I would say they are nms if spelled correctly. With the Ys they're awful.

I love your daughter's name, and I think Amelia or Viola would make a lovely sibset.

But...I'm asking seriously, are the spellings a joke? If not, please do not butcher those names by adding y's. It looks ridiculous, juvenile, and misspelled, not "modern."

Hahaha! LOVE these spellings! I'd think it'd be Pyrl though. I'm thinking this post is slightly fakey. Maybe after reading the FAQ someone decided to be "cute." Hmm

Yeah, I missed that post, and now that I've seen it, I'm gonna call joke here. Kudos, OP.

  • i hate old lady names!!! but if your going to use them keep the spelling the more common way. If i used an older name i would use it as a middle name if it has meaning like yours did.

  • You're joking right?

I love older style names, but those spellings are all ridiculous.

  • Bahahahaha

    Yes

  • The use of y's in place of i's looks like you are trying too hard to make an old name look modern.  The historical value of the name is lost.  This list of names (when in their traditional spelling) definitely don't appeal to me at all.

  • Names are always better when you have to sit there staring at them for awhile to figure them out, it's like a super fun puzzle!

  • You can't be serious.
  • If anything, you need to replace more of the vowels in the names with Y's. Otherwise awesome.

  • In agreement with every PP, please don't do 'y's.  In some cases they work, in others they are just horrific.  All these names are classic and beautiful but not with 'y's.  I love Amelia.  I also love Margaret and Elizabeth, as well as Molly and Pauline.  Modernize with a cool nn, but don't 'y' stuff. :)
  • I like Viola.

No matter what you choose, Please dont spell it how you have it on the list.

This is the order I like them.

    Viola

    Amelia

    Mildred.

    Doris

Spelling names wrong doesn't make then "more modern" or give them a twist.  It just makes them misspelled.  These are so horrendous it almost looks like MUD.

  • It would be even cooler if you took an Old Dude Name, and used it for you little girl. Amps the trendiness.

Some examples that come to mind:

    Ernyst

    Olyver

    Gyorge

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  • I like all of those names but the spelling is not attractive to read nor does it make the names interesting. I'm usually really cool about variant spellings but these are really unattractive to my eyes.

My suggestion is that you try pairing the "old Lady" name with a more modern name to get the effect I think you're trying to go for.

i.e. Mildred (nn Millie) Zoe, Ethel Trinity, Viola Arden, Amelia Clover or Dolores Ainsley. (sorry if you hate these combos, modern names are hard for me b/c they are NMS but hopefully you get the idea I was going for?)

The y thing is overused anyway, if you visit baby naming sites and read the articles it becomes obvious.

This all the way.  Just cause you add the "Y" doesn't make it modern, it makes it look kinda awful.

  • If you must use an "old lady" name to name your daughter at least please spell it correctly.
