What do early contractions feel like?

I understand they aren't painful necessarily, so what do they feel like?! I haven't had any BH so I don't really know. And she was moving so big today that it was really quite uncomfortable and I found myself wondering if those were contractions. I just realize I have no clue what I'm looking for. I'm SURE I'll realize it soon enough, but I suppose I'm curious how those early ones feel. And I know it's different for all of us, as some get underway all hot and heavy all at once. I'm just curious if you all can describe your past early labor experiences.

Re: What do early contractions feel like?

  • For me, I get cramps and my entire belly gets really tight. I know they aren't the same for everyone though.

  • With my first, they were like period cramps really low down that radiated to my lower back.  They were rhythmic.  However I never could feel my belly tighten, not even when I was in full-blown labor.  I felt them very low as opposed to across my whole belly.  This pregnancy I have been having very low-down cramping again that is becoming more frequent over the last 48 hours.  I'm thinking it's things getting ready to get started :-)  They feel like those first signs that your period is going to come - the type of cramps that don't really hurt too bad but are uncomfortable enough that you know flow is coming.
  • It's hard to describe, but they were just different from BH when they first started. I woke up one morning and had two really strong contractions about half an hour apart. They were completely different than the BH contrax I had been having (and I had tons of BH contrax before real labor). Everything in my belly got really, really tight and the tightness lasted about a minute. It spread from my belly to my sides and back and down into my upper thighs.

  • For me, it felt like menstrual cramps, and I never had any tightening. They just got stronger and closer together and that's how I knew it was contractions! I was thinking they would feel completely different.

  • For me, BH have been just a painless and slow clenching up of the uterus that stayed hard for a few seconds, then slowly relaxed. Uncomfortable, but not painful. False labor has felt totally different. There's a constant, dull ache in my back along with quick, rhythmic, back-to-back contractions and what feels like menstrual cramps down low when my ute hardens. And lots of pelvic pressure. But they stop after a couple of hours, and they don't increase in intensity, frequency, or pain, so I know it's not the real deal.
  • My BH contractions that I've had up to this point were painless, and just my stomach would get really tight.  I could see exactly where the baby was laying by just looking at my contracting belly.

After they stripped my membranes yesterday, I've had bad cramps in my back that feel like bad period cramps.  Sometimes they radiate to my belly and tighten it, but typically not, (so far).  For about 12 hours they were coming every 5-10 minutes and lasting about 30 sec to 1 minute.  Now, they've seemed to slowed.  They last about a 1-2 minutes but 10-30 minutes in between.  I am guessing that this will be false labor, but I've now been contracting for 30 hours or so.  I am able to sleep through them for the most part.  I know last night I did wake up during a few, and I was dreaming about it too, but I was still sleeping.

  • Mine starts with a little pain.discomfort in my back, and then in my lower uterus, and then my entire stomach tightens for about 45-60seconds, and then it all just goes away.

  • Mine felt like period cramps with more achiness in my back. I could also feel a lot of vaginal pressure, almost like I was feeling my cervix opening. And my belly got really, really tight.
