Utensils

Are your LO's using spoons or forks?  I've tried tons of times to offer a spoon and show him how it works.  All DS does is chew it or fling it.  I've also tried just leaving it on his tray so he can get used to it.  When I do that he's more interested in that than eating and its a hot mess.

What are you doing?

Re: Utensils

  • DS gets a spoon with most meals and may try to use it, but not successfully.  I think the only reason he is interested at this point is because he sees his big sister using one and will do anything to be like her at this point.  DD didn't get good with silverware until closer to 2, but I have no idea if that is normal or not.  My goal was to have her using utensils in time for preschool at 3, but I'm pretty laid back about those type of things.

  • We tried, but we just got chewing and flinging here too. I think we will probably just wait a while, I don't think she is ready quite yet.
  • DS loves his spoon...he gets the concept, but isn't successful very often.  Most of the time if I feed him with a spoon (typically just in the morning for oatmeal, everything else he self feeds) he helps hold onto the spoon and I guide it towards his mouth.  If I'm feeling like cleaning up the mess, I will let him attempt it alone - he does well getting the spoon into the bowl, but isn't very good at scooping the food.  Occassionally he will get food on the spoon and to his mouth successfully, but it's not very often.

He actually gets mad sometimes when you spoon feed him and he wants to do it himself.  So, he's at least working on it and is occassionally successful with it.

  • She uses a spork. She can't stab anything yet so I do the stabbing and she directs it to her mouth :

  • He's interested, but he doesn't quite care enough to really use them yet. He can spear things with a fork, but he won't put it in his mouth once he has something. He loves putting a spoon into something, but again, he usually won't put it in his mouth.

I just saw your answer Moongirl. So funny that they're total opposites.

  • Glad you asked this--I was planning to, then never got around to it. I found some Nuby forks and spoons that are short and have a curved handle. I offer them to DD at dinner, but she hasn't really put 2 and 2 together. She usually puts the food in to her mouth with her hands, then puts the fork in her mouth. :)
