Dropping nighttime feeding (1 year old)

I've partially weaned DS so he is not nursing during the day. He nurses once in the evening, once overnight and sometimes in the morning. I know the overnight feeding should be next to go because there is no reason he should be waking up to nurse at this age; he gets enough to eat during the day. I just don't know how to get rid of it. The daytime feedings are replaced by meals and WCM, but what can I do at night when he wakes up screaming to be nursed?

Re: Dropping nighttime feeding (1 year old)

  • We started putting a sippy of water in bed with DS.  I would tell him before bed time that he was going to sleep like a big boy with no "mommy milk" until the next day.  If he woke up, either myself or DH would go in and give him his water.  A night or two included holding DS and cuddling in his chair in his room for a few minutes with his sippy of water.  It took a few nights and a couple tears, but nothing too rough.

  • mlesser - totally off topic, but congrats on the pregnancy!  how did it happen so fast?  did you get your regular periods back pretty quickly after DS?

  • I still nurse once overnight, but now if he wakes before 3 or 4, he gets a cuddle and put back in the crib. Sometimes I do it, sometimes DH does it. He cries for a minute or two and goes back to sleep.

It might not be as bad as you think.
