Am I Crazy: No PNP/Co-Sleeper?

I registered for an Original Arms Reach Co-Sleeper, but no one bought it for me.  I'm thinking maybe I can do without it rather than purchasing it ourselves.  We have one RNP, one bouncer and two swings... I'm thinking maybe I'll get another RNP and that should be enough as far as alternate sleeping places for the babies, no?

If we had the co-sleeper or PNP I would think we'd use it in the living room b/c the co-sleeper won't actually fit next to our bed so we would just use it as a bassinet.  The nursery is right across the hall from our room, so I'm not sure I'll even have them room-in with us anyway... as long as I'm up I might as well take 3 extra steps and be in their room where all their stuff is anyway, you know?

So, am I going to really want a PNP/co-sleeper for downstairs, or will the RNPs/swings, bouncer be enough for now?

(I realize I'll want one later for when we travel, but I'm not really worried about that now.)

Re: Am I Crazy: No PNP/Co-Sleeper?

  • I had the same set up where our bedroom was right next to the nursery so they slept in their cribs.  I only had one PNP set up in the living room and we really didn't use it very much when we were home.  It came in handy when we went to other people's houses, but that was the only use we got out of it.

  • My singletons were in their own cribs in their own rooms by about a week old. They also started STTN by a month or two old. I'm trying to get a cosleeper or at least a large bassinet that I can use in my room a bit longer with the twins because I'll probably be recovering from a CS and it'd be easier to have everyone just right there in the room with me. But I'm sure I'll be fine whether we have one or not.

  • What you have is fine. I used a PNP for naps downstairs but that didn't last long b/c of the bassinet's weight limit. My kids naped in swings til they were 6/7mo old and were in their cribs at night on day 1.
  • We started out with a crib in our bedroom. We got mini cribs so it worked out fine.  They are actually now both in our bedroom because I can't just bite the bullet and put them in their nursery (I promised DH I'd do it by 6 months).

Anyway, we don't own a PNP or a co-sleeper and at this point I'm glad we didn't waste our money. We may get a PNP when they get bigger but having one for this stage was completely unnecessary. They've never slept anywhere except my bed (the first couple weeks they were home they slept with me (alone) in my queen bed) and then went to their cribs exclusively.

  • We had 2 swings, 2 bouncy seats and didn't get PnPs until they were 5 months old and we were going on a vacation. We had them in their own rooms from day 1, because their room was literally next to ours. It wasn't that big of a deal to go to them.

Mine napped in bouncy seats for a few weeks but they became too alert to be in the living room during naptime so by 6 weeks old, all naps were in cribs and if they woke up mid-nap, they would go in swings, which were also in the living room, but they were able to sleep better in there than in the bouncy seats. Night sleep was always in cribs.

  • We had an Original Cosleeper and only used it about the first 10 days; the boys just made WAY too much noise during the night so we moved them to the nursery and started sleeping in shifts.

  • We loved the RNPs and the great thing is that we could let the babies fall asleep in them in the living room with us, then when we were ready for bed just carry them (in the RNPs) into our bedroom.  The RNPs are very light.  They also fold up small so if we were going to my ILs we would just toss them in the car.  If you have a big enough trunk and are just going local you could bring those instead of a PnP.  It would be quicker to pop those open rather then set up a PnP and if your LOs get used to sleeping on an incline they will probably sleep better in those then in a PnP.

  • Well, you are not crazy but if you will get a PNP later why not just have it now and then you have it handy? We use ours a lot: at home and for sleep-overs and travel, but I recommend using the MamaDoo Kids mattress topper for much needed extra comfort and support (our son would wake up all the time he was so uncomfortable!). It if firm but comfy and folds in 3 (so convenient!). Good luck and congratulations!
