Pre-School and Daycare

This is normal....right?!?

DS is going to be 3 in November. When we go to the park he likes to play with all of the kids regardless of how old they are. So he'll run up to a group of older kids (who are typically playing a game like tag or something) and will try to play with them. The older kids pretty much want nothing to do with him. Most of the time they just ignore him but sometimes they're mean (in my opinion!) and will tell him to "go away" or "leave them alone".

I know it's normal for bigger kids to not want toddlers playing with them. But, is it normal for DS to not really pick up on the fact that he's not wanted? He'll usually still hang around them and try to play until I redirect him. Even after being redirected he'll still go back to the big kids.

  • Yes, it's normal. I have seen kids try to play with DD, the same age, and she wants to play on her own. She always gets frustrated because they don't get the not so subtle hint.

Btw, my middle name is Drew too!

Cool! Were you named after someone? DH is Andrew and we thought it'd be nice to use his name somehow!

  • There is an ice cream place here that my mom ate a lot when she was pregnant called Ted Drewes. She said its from that, but really my parents couldn't agree on any middle names from their girl list, so they went down the boy list. They liked it so much they called my by Drew instead of my first name.

I know a lot of people don't like Drew for a girl but I love it! I knew a Drew in middle school and she was so outgoing, down to earth, friends with everyone...so I guess I just have a good association with it!

  • Totally normal. Especially, because little kids always want to play up in age so they gravitate towards the older kids. I find the older girls are more willing to play down in age and are more willing to play with DS1 than boys.

  • Ryan does the same thing and hell be three in december. The bigger kids make a game out of it but it seems like Ryan likes it too. We don't interfere unless Ryan isn't liking it or could get hurt then we move to another part of our playground.
