2nd Trimester

Weight loss

I will be 14 weeks along tomorrow and I weighed this morning and I am now over a pound less than my pre-pregnancy weight. In the beginning I had gained about 8 lbs but then morning sickness hit around week eight and since then I have done nothing but loose weight. The problem is I am not throwing up too terribly often so it must be lack of food but I feel like I do nothing but eat all day long. I eat a very small amount at at time because I start to feel nauseous after a normal serving size. I am so scared that I am not getting enough nutrients to keep my baby healthy. My next doctors appt isn't until next Tuesday so I just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone else has experienced weight loss and have any suggestions.

Re: Weight loss

  • I have also lost weight (in first trimester) Dr. said - baby takes nutrients first and to do your best to eat a BALANCED diet... but I am plus sized so, losing weight isn't really a big deal - in fact they only want me to gain 10-15 lbs thru the entire pregnancy!!! Make sure you are taking your pre-natals and drinking lots of water... GL

  • I'm not far enough along in this pregnancy to know if it's consistent, but my metabolism went into overdrive last time with DD.  I ate a ton, didn't gain much throughout the pregnancy, and when the post-partum bloat went away I was nearly two dress sizes smaller (12 to 8) than pre-pregnancy.  DD was perfectly healthy, 7 lb 2 oz.  As long as your baby is continuing to grow and you're eating enough food and a balanced diet, I wouldn't worry about it if your doc isn't.

  • Lurking, but with DS I lost 16 Ibs with DS, and the Dr wasn't concerned at all.

  • I also lost a ton of weight during my first trimester - I was down about 12 pounds by the time I stopped throwing up (3x a day). I was also really worried, but my doc reassured me that as long as I was doing my best to take multivitamins (Flinstone's chewables ended up being the only thing I could stomach) and I was staying hydrated, the first trimester weight loss wasn't a problem for the baby (apparently the body prioritizes the baby?)

I'll note that I'm 25 weeks now, and my appetite is only now starting to come back. I had a very hard time eating enough to put on any weight - in the end, I had to track my calories to make sure I was getting enough to eat every day (I don't think myfitnesspal is intended to help you gain weight, but it worked for me - I just figured out what I was using and added 300 calories a day for the baby).

I'm now back up to my pre-pregnancy weight. It helped to do all the things I've spent years avoiding in an attempt to keep the weight off (switching back to whole milk, using butter on my toast/muffin in the morning, using real sugar on everything instead of splenda, eating dessert, etc.)

  • Sounds fine, but it depends on what your weight was like before pregnancy too.  If you're overweight already chances are you could lose or stay pretty much the same if you're eating healthy.  Some people end up eating much healthier when they find out they're pregnant and lose the fat while the baby is still gaining.

Just keep eating healthy/ taking your vitamins and you should be fine.  you can always check with your doctor on Tuesday too

  • I didn't hit my pre-pregnancy weight until 20 weeks, and have been putting on 1/2-1 lb a week so far.  Don't worry - you will get there!  Now I'm not even bothered about my weight because I eat TONS of veggies, fruits, whole grains, legumes and lean meats.  My appetite is smaller than pre-pregnancy so I just try to eat 4-5 smaller meals a day.

My midwives were a bit concerned about my weight but my OB/GYN wasn't concerned at all because she figured by 5-6 months the weight would start to pick back up.  Just make sure you eat a healthy balanced diet and take your prenatals :).

  • I wouldn't worry too much! I was 212lbs when I got pregnant and when I weighed myself at 14-15 weeks I was 207lbs, after urinating or a bowel movement I was like 205/6lbs - morning weight. Unlike you, I didn't have morning sickness...I had food aversions and became a very picky eater however if I found the food I liked...I ate it! Now that I'm 18 weeks I've noticed over the past 3-4 days my appetite has definitely picked up. I still can't stomach the thought of sweets but I'm eating more. When I weighed myself this morning after urinating and bowel movement I was 208lbs!! You're at the beginning of your 2nd trimester and I know it's different for everyone woman but weight gain should pick up over the next few weeks. When I posted a similar question to yours around 14-15 weeks I got a lot of replies that other women starting gaining weight around 20 weeks! When your doctor weighs you at the beginning of your appointment bring it up them, that way you can have some ease to your question.

  • I've lost weight throughout my entire pregnancy. I had a little extra to begin with, and I have some hormonal issues that were in the way of me losing any significant weight before pregnancy, so that had something to do with it, also. My doctor says I'm going to have a net loss when the baby comes, which didn't come as a surprise to me, really. But, he's growing fine, so there's no need to worry. So long as your doctor isn't worried and your baby is growing well, it's okay to lose weight. Just don't purposely diet or anything.

  • I have lost 11 lbs so far. I have terrible morning sickness and really no appetite, but my dr is not concerned, she says the more pregnant she gets the worse she gets. Hang in there!!
