TTC after 35

New to this Board

Hi. I was a long-time user of the Knot, a short-time user of the Nest, and now I am a new user of the Bump. I'm pretty intimidated by these boards. Everyone is so much more advanced and technical than I am. I am constantly flipping back to the glossary to figure out acronyms! I am here because the nurse strongly suggested I look to some TTC boards for support. I didn't know where else to go but here! :) We have been TTC for almost 3 years. We had one pregnancy (about 7 weeks along) that I lost this January. I am 41. We've decided to not waste another day and start the IVF process. Today I had a Saline Sonogram that turned up a fuzzy, unidentifiable spot up in the upper right corner of my uterus. The Doc offered me 3 choices: Ignore it and proceed with IVF process, wait a month and do another Saline Sonogram to see if the mass disappears, or schedule a hysteroscopy to remove whatever it is. I have no idea what decision to make. And moreover, I am fairly depressed today because of how much he impressed upon me that it is so very unlikely that I will ever have the baby we are hoping for: At age 41, my chances of getting pregnant are about 15%. If I'm in the 15% who gets pregnant, I have up to a 60% chance of miscarriage. Then, if I am in the % who carries to term, there is a 1 in 40 chance of a chromosomal abnormality. These stats are simply depressing. Can anyone offer any words of encouragement? I'm hoping to wake up ready to fight another day! :)

Re: New to this Board

  • Welcome.

I hope you find the support you need here and good luck on your TTC journey.

I'm 42 and I opted to do IVF with PGD so that I could at least increase my chances of a chromosomally normal embryo.  I'll be doing a FET next week and implanting one of them.  I felt that at my age, it was the best option for me for the best chances.  However, PGD isn't for everyone and it might not be possible given your ovarian reserve.

I had a saline sonogram that showed a little irregularity.  I opted to repeat the study and it did turn out normal.  But if it didn't, the next step would have been a hysteroscopy.

Best of luck in you choices and I hope for the best for you.  You will find a great amount of support here among these wonderful women.

  • Welcome to the group!  I am 43yo.  After 3 IVF cycles with our OE, we decided to move onto DE.  Our very first RE stated that our ONLY option to conceive was with using DE, and at that time we were not ready to hear/believe this.  Fast forward a year later, and we are tired and ready to try something else with greater chances of success.  Good luck!

Seriously though this group of ladies on here are awesome. I don't know what I would of done without them. Very supportive. With only one chance at this since everything is so expensive and of my age we are in the process of using DE. I wish you the best of luck on this journey!

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

  • Welcome & I wish you lots of luck and a short stay!

Moving back down 2 yrs now... I am 42, just got married for the 1st time in June & we are TTC naturally.  My DH has no interest in me taking any type of drugs, IVF or IUI - so if it doesn't happen on its own we are sol.  I too agree on not taking any drugs to help the pregnancy along, but would have considered IUI - now that I understand what they do.  I am charting my temp & mucous & also using OPK (ovulation predictor kit strips) - that is about all I can do.

I did add Folic Acid & B6 to my diet about 3 mths before we started TTC.  We are only on our 3rd mth ttc, but are realistic that it may not happen for us.  If it doesn't, then my DH said he will be taking me on lots of nice vacations... This cycle looks promising for us & the last two days I have been so tired after dinner, that I have been going to bed early.  Im hoping that is a symptom...

Good luck on your journey & the ladies here are very helpful & full of knowledge.

  • Welcome to the board! Women are awesome-- a TON of knowledge, experience, and the ovaries to give each other a kick in the pants when needed or, as is usually the case, encouragement and hugs.

I'm "only" 37 (38 in 2 months) and have not reached the IUI stage, although that appears to be in the very near future. So I don't have any advice on your particular dilemma, but I wanted to welcome you and wish you GL!

  • Welcome to the board.   Lots of women at 41 have successful pregnancies.  All you can do is try. You won't know until you do.  I just turned 39 and have been trying since I was 37. I've done 4 IVFs and never had a good embryo. I also don't make many eggs.  You have a better shot if you can produce a bunch of eggs but there are always some who get lucky with a golden egg.  I am starting a donor egg cycle soon as I just didn't believe I'd get lucky.

Do you know what your ovarian reserve is? (ie CD3 FSH/E2 and AMH and AFC)

  • Welcome to the board!  Hopefully we can help you get some of your fight back because statistics are just numbers on a piece of paper and every woman is different so who's to say which side of the odds you will land on.  Just take it one step at a time.  Hope you stay with us ends up being a short one.
Me 39 & suspected PCOS, DH 42. Went off BCP when we got married in 11/11, seriously TTC since 3/12.  Six cycles of clomid = BFNs.  Suspected endometriosis & HSG showed both tubes blocked.  Sept 2013 IVF 5D transfer of two perfect embryos = BFN.  Started acupuncture and taking time off to drop some pounds & get healthier before FET in April 2014.

Screw the stats.  Stay hopeful.  You're not out yet.

    Just my opinion.

Qzees- Thank you! I wish you much luck, trying naturally. Obviously that would be the best, being able to skip the medical interference!
danieleand- Thanks! You have a great attitude! Good luck to you!
Mrs.McIris- We're definitely trying! I give you so much credit for FOUR IVFs! We only have resources for one, maybe two, so our fingers are crossed! I don't know my ovarian reserve. When we go for our consult next week, I'll ask for a copy of my blood results.
    Llamamama- Thank you!
robbensm- Thanks! I was just too weak to fight last night, but today's another day. I agree...one step at a time, but it's hard not to get ahead of myself.
BabyVDM- Yes, the Dr.'s stats brought tears to my husband's eyes, which was most difficult for me. Thanks for your support!
    jrtmom- Thank you!
Abeille- Thank you! Here's hoping! :)

For PGD you have to produce enough embryos that make it to either day 3 or day 5 to do the biopsy. My RE does the biopsy on day 5, so they have to make it to the blastocyst stage. After that, they freeze them while they wait for the results. He said that one ideally would hope for about 5 or 6 of them to test. If you can't produce that much then it's generally not recommended to do PGD. After going through it, I understand. I was lucky enough to be a great responder and after seeing the results on my PGD'ed embryos, I was shocked to see the number of abnormalities. I ended up with 2 normals. You can see in my siggy how many I started with. For the first time in my life, I really felt my age! Wishing you the best!

  • Hello! I guess I'm "young" here - 36yr ...trying for my first,  we're still trying naturally, though it's been over two years (and longer since we stopped having protected sex)

I don't think I can be much help to you as far as information but I'm a firm believer that ANY chance is better than none... but I'm curious about the 15% chance of getting pregnant thing though - what I've heard is that even under the most ideal conditions, every cycle you only have a 20% chance of being pregnant anyway, in which case 15% doesn't seem SO bad... or is it 15% compared to something else?

[edited] sorry, I reread what I wrote and realized it turned into a long rant about me! So I just cut stuff out.
