Heard of this?

I just got the following email and have no idea what in the world my friend is talking about.  What is this?  Has anyone heard of this?  Is post partum pre-e a common thing? Background--the friend in question had a crappy pregnancy from the get go--sick through the whole thing, GD, Pre-E, and her husband (paramedic) left her in March and gave up parental rights.

"Ang has been hospitalized.  She has some type of syndrome that is like post partum preeclampsia.  The hospital thought she was having cardiac arrest last night, and she was having problems with her kidneys and liver.  And to top it all off, her divorce was supposed to be final this week.  Rick was on another call at the same hospital, so he was in the ER causing drama and saying he wasn?t going to finalize this week.  "

Re: Heard of this?

  • If I'm not mistaken it sounds like HELLP syndrome? It's the super advanced stages of pre-eclampsia and has been known to occur after child birth. Like I said, I think that's what it's called as I've only done a bit of research but T&P to your friend for a speedy recovery and hope her and LO will be doing fine shortly!

  • The only time I've ever heard of postpartum pree was on House. I just assumed they made it up for the show...

  • She texted me back--it's postpartum preeclampsia--for now.  They haven't changed it to be HELLP, but are running more tests.

I find the whole thing so bizarre!!
