Babies: 0 - 3 Months

SIDS, blankets, and lovies

Hello, my son is 5 1/2 months old and I never have felt comfortable having anything in his crib with him, ie:  bumpers, blankets, etc.  I have him sleep in a halo sleep sack.  But, I have a question, daycare mentioned they have him nap with his blanket ( I provided it to them for going outside, covering his legs in the swing, etc ).  Before, I flip out, is this okay at his age?  Is it safe in regards to him not smothering himself?  Does he have enough control now to be okay with a blanket?  I told daycare when he first started to NOT have the blanket in his crib ( that was 2 months ago ).

I also wonder about introducing a lovey and if so, what people have used that are safe and work well.

Thank you

  • We didn't use blankets until DD was 1yr old, but she's always slept with a teddy or some sort of soft toy in her crib.

  • I would think if they watch him a blanket would be ok.  I let ds take his lovey but I put 2 scrunchies around the blanket part so he can't smother his face with it-probably a bit overprotective but it gives me peace of mind and he still loves his lovey!

  • DS sleeps at night w/ a blanket, I've never found it over his face - only kicked off.

During the day, I'd think they are constantly checking on him, around, etc to see if he pulls it over his face.  They could try it, and if he pulls it up, then stop?

  • I'm not yet comfortable with DD having anything in her crib either.  Whether or not you decide to let your DS sleep with a blanket, I would still have a talk with your DCP.  It's not there place to decide if they want to have you son sleep with a blanket or not -- I would not want my DCP making that kind of decision given all the debates out there about whether or not it's safe at his age.

  • At daycare it should be fine... he is being constantly monitored. As far as doing it at home during the night.... well I think it's a little stupid to intentionally raise the SIDS risk for your child.
  • Yeah, I am not "intentionally trying to raise the SIDS risk", thanks, I was asking if it was safe at his age, my post states that I use a sleep sack at home.

LoL - I think this was directed at someone else, not you.
