Has anyone used hibiclens as a vaginal wash for GBS, and if you have, did it burn? It is recommended by the birth center in our town (2 tbsp of hibiclens in 20 oz of water, use peribottle to squirt vaginal area and slightly inside vagina). However I've read it can cause burning & irritation. Any info from personal experience would be great.
Re: Hibiclens
I was planning a home birth and was going to do the hibiclens wash because I was GBS+. I ended up testing positive in my urine for GBS, which is thought to increase the transmission risk from 1/200 to 1/25. So, I transferred to the hospital for birth. I received IV antibiotics, had my vbac, (woohoo!) and when I was getting cleaned up after the birth, a nurse offered me the hibiclens peribottle wash. She said it was offered to all women postbirth. I was definitely not totally intact down there, so I would guess if it was ever going to burn it would've then. But it didn't hurt in the slightest. So that's my long way of saying: in my experience, it didn't hurt. (But maybe that's because natural childbirth was so fresh in my mind?!)
Did your test come out negative??? Here's another question - our practice has me pee in a cup upon arrival to check for protein in urine. My plan was to use the hibiclens before I went to my GBS test appt, but also to bring a peribottle of the hibiclens & give an extra "squirt" after peeing in a cup at the office to make sure it's 100% clean down there before the test. Crazy idea?
Sorry for my late response, but yes, my test came back negative.
Also, I don't think you would need to bring a peri bottle full of hibiclense. My midwife told me to do it 4 hours before she came and did my test at home. I used a wash cloth and cleaned.
