Multiples

Hmm, what are my chances..

Of having more than one, Based on my follicles?  I just finished Gonal F Injections and I knew before hand multiples is a possibility. When I went in yesterday for my ultrasould, I had two follicles that were almost mature and a few that were starting to grow. My bloodwork confirmed that my Estrogen level was 440. So I triggered this morning. My husbands sperm is normal, and we didn't do IUI. I was just wondering based on my follicles and everything, What are my chances of having more than one, and if more than one, just based on the two follicles that they knew were gonna mature, how many could I have at the most? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Hmm, what are my chances..

  • There really isn't an "at most" lol the identical zygote splitting makes that one unpredictable. It does sound like you could be releasing two eggs if it looks like you have two mature pockets and no extra weird cysts. The rest depends on viability of the eggs, health and speed of the sperm, successful fertilization, implantation, etc. Most of the people here either had embryo transfers or were totally spontaneous and didn't monitor their follicles. In my completely uneducation non-medical opinion, I'd just say it's a higher possibility than it would be with just one mature :)

  • Nobody can predict that.  Your doctor should have counseled you regarding the stats but it's really not something you can say with certainty.  Women underdoing fertility treatment already have a lower rate of pregnancy, so it's less than soemone with normal fertility and 2 mature follicles.  All anyone can tell is that with 2 mature follicles you are twice as likely to get pregnant.

Don't forget you are asking all people with multiples and you would be better asking on SAIF where they have a variety of outcomes.

    Good luck!

  • No way to know! I did 3 failed IUIs before the IVF that gave us the twins and each of those I had closer to 4 mature follies.. so it could really go either way depending on your issues etc. Good luck!
  • There is no way to really tell you. When I got pregnant with the triplets I had 3 mature follies (Clomid) and all three took. When I got pregnant with Jericho I had 2 mature follies (Menopur) and only one took. My RE suggests not going forward with more than 2-3 follies.

This is me, but my RE never let me trigger with any more than two. You have a slightly increased chance of multiples with gonadotropins,  but there is really no way to know until that first ultrasound after a positive beta.

  • Did your RE not go over this with you?
Of course anything is possible. This board is comprised of spontaneous multiples and multiples from fertility drugs. Depending on the day you may not get many with fertility treatment knowledge so I would check on the saif board.
....my thoughts are that you should only count the two mature follicles at trigger FYI. I wouldn't worry about the smaller ones.

This. I got pg once on my own so I'm assuming I got pg with one baby from one follie (but I m/c). I did IUIs with 2 and 3 follies and didn't get pg at all. I did IVF with 2 embryos and got 2 babies.

Your RE really should have explained the stats to you.
