  • I would look into Clean Eating if you are looking to eat healthier.  Going vegan can be healthier if you are coming from a standard American diet, but it isn't any healthier than eating fresh and unprocessed fruits, vegetables, meat, and healthy fats.

Any suggestions for reading up on clean eating?
  • Here is a quick article explaining it:

And a book by Tosca Reno that gets great reviews

I actually eat a primal diet, which is eating clean (unprocessed, whole foods) but I don't eat legumes or grains.  This works better for me because I get bloated and have GI problems from them.  I also don't worry about my fat intake.  I found that when I don't eat processed foods, fat actually helps accelerate my weight-loss.

Here is a good site if you are interested in primal eating.

  • Actually a mostly vegan, whole foods, plant based diet has been shown to be the healthiest long term diet with the least incidences of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc...  Multiple studies has shown this to be true. Here are a few resources:

I think that this statement is a matter of opinion and philosophy, but I understand the sentiment behind it.  Eating clean, no matter whether you incorporate animal product in your diet is far superior to eating the standard Western Diet.

Eating vegan is really simple.  Eating primal is even simpler, IMO.  Rule of thumb is to start with anything that DOESN'T COME PRE-PACKAGED.

Fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, some oils, wild caught/pasture-raised meats/eggs, etc. are all examples of foods that are a good idea.

Do a google search of vegan philosophy and a google search of primal/paleo philosophy.  See which one jives with your personality/how you opine that humans should eat.  That will make it more sustainable in the long run.

We are a vegan household.  I enjoy the way that we eat, and have found many, many blogs to use for recipes through pinterest and google searches.

    Good luck!! :)

  • With regard to working out.  I have found that Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30 workout DVDs are perfect for naptime workouts.

I time my workouts with LOs' longest naps of the day (1-3pm).  We also take 4-6 mile walks 5x/week in the morning.

At night, after DH gets home from work, I take 30-45 minutes to run outside by myself.

Coordinate with your SO to ensure that you get time to workout.  Schedule it like you would a doctor's appt.  So, if you want to work out at 6:45pm every M-F, let SO know that this is your plan and find a way to work it into your family's schedule.

    Good luck!! :)

  • I absolutely agree with JaysonandKristin, the best diet is one that eliminates processed foods, cuts out sugar, focuses on fruits and vegetables, and is one that you can stick to long term.  That is why I suggested Clean Eating, it is the most moderate approach and I think that a lot of people do best with "everything in moderation." I think it is important that everyone to do research about different, healthy, sustainable ways of eating and figure out what works best for them.

I meant what I said about vegan being on par with a simple diet of meat, vegetables and health fat.  It has yet to be proven which diet is superior for long term health, though I think we can all agree it has been shown that a diet that eliminates processed foods and focuses on eating a large variety of vegetables has health benefits.

I have watch Forks Over Knives and read The China Study.  They are not conclusive however and more research needs to be done.  Here is a link to a site that has examined the researched used in both if you are interested.
