Pregnant after 35

Perinatologist Visits

Hi all! I am just a lurker normally but wanted some advise from the pro's on this one.

Basic info: I have 1 DS (I was 35) and 1 on the way ( i will be 37 for this one). For my first pregnancy I saw a Peri the entire time, but this time the dr has dismissed me as of today at my 20 week visit.

Is that normal or do you find this to be strange as well? She did offer to see me at 32 weeks for another scan but outside of that felt okay releasing me.

 Thanks!

Re: Perinatologist Visits

  • For both my pregnancies, at 35 and 38, I only saw the peri for testing and u/s's during the 2nd trimester. The NT scan, a/s and fetalecho were all done by a peri, but as I had no issues I was sent on my way once I was done with that stuff.

  • The only interaction I had with the peri during my second pregnancy was to do the 20 week u/s (delivered a month shy of age 36). Otherwise, it was all just regular OB. Would have been the same this time (I'm 37; baby due a month before I turn 38) but I have a 2-vessel cord and will therefore have growth ultrasounds with the perinatologist monthly in addition to my appointments with my regular OB.

  • I am a FTM and am 41 - I have only seen the perinatologist for the 1st trimester screening, anatomy scan/level 2 u/s and CVS.  Once I had the anatomy scan and everything was normal, they told me that I would no longer have to see them.

  • I've seen them for every visit since week 10. At one point one of the doctors in my group said I could just go see a regular OB if I wanted, but there's much less of a wait time with the peri group and it just makes me feel better to  have them checking on the baby.
  • With my DS (born when I was 37) I only saw both my OB and my Peri up until the the amnio came back ok.  Then I just saw my OB for the remainder of the pregnancy.

  • Thanks for all your responses! I feel better now and will go back to lurking unless i have useful information to share.

hisbabygirl76- I see one because I am older but also DS1 was born with a birth defect on his right hand so they are double checking because of that.

  • Even though I went to MFM for my tests, all my regular appointments were with the MW I had been seeing for years.  If I had opted out of all the testing, I would have never seen the peri.

I am very confused here. I am only seeing my midwife and I asked her if there would be a need (short of something coming up putting me high risk) to see anyone but her because of my age (36) and she said nope.  Is there other reasons you all see a Peri? I will have my daughter's cardiologist do the fetal echo but that is my only extra.
I only saw the peri because my OB's office, although it performs u/s's, doesn't perform the more advanced/involved u/s's. Everyone who goes to my practice gets sent to the peri, regardless of age.
  • I'm not sure what to think! My friend, who is due a week after me who is 36 and I (I'm 40) have the same Peri.  She only saw him at 20 weeks and I saw him at 20, 30, 34, and 37 weeks--I saw him yesterday.  I haven't had any complications, my amnio was done at 20 weeks and came back perfect.  So it's weird.  I chalked it up to he likes my insurance.  I didn't know my friend had only seen him the one time-- we had dinner last Friday and that's when we talked about it.
  • I only saw the peri for 2 anatomy scans.  It would have only been one, but the baby was in a difficult position to see everything for the first one.  My OB takes care of the rest.  I'm pretty comfortable with that.
